Upon waxing the smart car, I notice very minor nicks in the front plastic body panel's metallic paint.

My preference would be to do nothing if panel nicks usually don't worsen the impacted paint over time. (The added bulge of touch-up on the panel is unappealing to me; I'm fine with leaving the nicks alone).

But if doing nothing could inevitably lead to a more visable defect over time, like warping or peeling, then...

Is the preventative maintenance as simple as applying some clear coat (no paint) over the nicks to protect from worsening?

Jetfuel said it. The clear polish fills in and disappears better than touch up paint. I used to have a clear vinyl wrap on my old smart and that worked wonders if you know someone who can install it. It was relatively cheap, could be cleaned easily, and came off like a sticker if it needed to be replaced, which it never did.
