I took a 13 mile ride out to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area for morning coffee. I pulled into an overlook area one of the highest in the park. There was only one passenger van and about dozen people. I turned off the engine and some of the people walked over and I believe were talking about my smart, but I couldn't understand them because they were speaking French. So, I got out of the car and one couple in particular introduced the group as being from France. Most it seemed, spoke good english.
Some were wondering about what engine I had in my Smart. They like the sound of my car and thought I had a different engine in it. I explained that it was the standard 1 liter for the US, but I had added an air scoop to the outside to ram air through the air filter box using a K&N filter. I explained that I removed the intake resonator, replaced it with a "straight" tube from the air filter box to the throttle body (resulting in some extra sound) and replaced the exhaust and muffler with a mildly aggressive sounding solo performance muffler.
One couple who own a smart back in France, really liked the sound and asked me to email a description of the mods I have done.
On a side note. Unrelated to this trip.
Right after I had removed the intake resonator and installed the smart madness straight pipe and air scoop.
Someone asked "PM" me why I didn't go with a "cold" air intake installed inside the engine compartment.
My thoughts were, that at 50-70+mph ambient air being rammed into the air filter box with a oem sized K&N filter via the added side scoop from the slipstream down the side of the car would be a lot cooler than any air having to be pulled from the confines of the small engine compartment with the heat of the engine, exhaust pipe and muffler.
