Ok, a friend of mine went and looked over the ‘08 Passion with a bad motor that I’m buying. The pics the owner posted on eBay show the odometer at: 31,265. When my friend went and took several pics of the car, the odometer showed: -411. ????? Can anyone provide any insight on this?

That's the maintenance interval reminder. It's way past time! Likely it didn't get reset or perhaps poor maintenance was the reason it died.

Yeah, your friend didn't pay attention to the screen that was showing. On your friend's cars he always has the total mileage screen showing. Your friend as an afterthought just snapped that picture without really looking closely. Your friend apologies. :)

Signed - your friend. :)

The maintenance reminder counts in both days and miles. Every service is due every 365 days or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first.

It counts miles in 100s and days in 1s. So a reading that is -411 means 411 days overdue for a service.

During this time it should also display a flashing wrench. A single wrench is an A service (usually an oil change and an inspection) while two wrenches are a more-involved B service.

Most of the time it means that the owner never reset the maintenance counter.

What's the B-service??
A B-service (typically at even numbered mileages like 20k, 40k, 60k etc) usually involves more parts and labor. I don't think smart officially calls it that but I've seen it used in European smart communities. Just know that a double wrench service is more involved. lol

For example, the 20k service has a brake fluid flush, 40k is coolant and brake fluid, 60k is valve check and adjust and brake fluid...

When I bought my 2012 brand new I had the dealership do the 10k. It was $130. When the 20k came around the dealership quoted me $450. I laughed and decided to start doing my own maintenance.

For giggles, I asked the dealership what would the 60k service cost. $600 for the valve check alone and a grand total of $1,050.
