Most likely it is the fan behind the radiator. if it is just running, then not to worry. if it is making a LOUD noise like a card in the spokes of a bicycle, then you got problems. Turning on the A/C should make the fan come on in the front of the car.

my 2014 smart with 42K has a fan or motor grown coming from the front of the car mostly when you shut it off. I believe it is the fan that stays on a few seconds after you shut off the car.
WHICH fan would that be?
A few weeks back the noise was intermittent and sounded like an old shop vac when you turn it off and the motor squeals as it spins down. I do not think it the blower motor under the dash as you can run the fan at all speeds and it sound and works fine. It really sounds like it under in bonnet, but there is alot of stuff there.
