The Smart has sold, updating to close this discussion...

My wife and I have had our 2009 Smart Fortwo Passion since January of 2013. It has 52,200 miles on it, heated leather, 6 disc changer with sub package, and the panoramic moon roof. We listed it for sale, for $4400, within the last month. It has been a great car, has needed minimal repairs, has great gas mileage and the fun-factor. The only things it needs is the A/C recharged and the change-over valve replaced. I was offered $3850, top dollar and no more than that. I verbally told the buyer it was a deal, even though I wasn't happy about it. We have nothing in writing. It was my only offer, out of 500+ views, so I felt compelled to take what I could get. The sale will most likely take place sometime later this week, possibly Thursday.

What I want know, living in northwest Minnesota and not driving 5 months out of the year because of snow, is it worth is to keep it? Should I take the offer or is it worth more? Or should I even sell?

Thanks in advance.

@jwight The only reasons we we're deciding to sell is we have two 4x4's (2007 Avalanche and 1995 S-10 Blazer V6) for the snow, multiple vehicles to insure and gas-up (minimal for the Smart). The only reasons we'd keep is the gas mileage, it's maneuverability, it's uniqueness and fun factor. It also has the lowest overall mileage (52k, compared to 181k and 123k).

I would love to keep, but I'm on the fence. I was thrilled when I found out Smart was coming to the US back in '07 or so. I couldn't wait to drive one or own one and researched for days on owning the smallest car in America! In fact, the guy that made the offer said I should be a Smart salesman! It's too bad they cut the sales here in the US, I would of loved to sell them, if I had a dealership. Maybe he was trying to soften me up for his original offer of $3700... who knows?

My only other major cause for concern is availability of parts, cost and labor from here on out.

@jzchen The buyer is experienced, he said he bought another old truck a week ago and has an entire fleet of big rigs. I will admit, I haven't sold enough cars to be well versed in offers or negotiating. I just don't know if $3850 is enough, but don't want to lose the sale either. We love the car, need our 4x4's, but are trying to save where we can, even though the Smart is a money saver, but only in summer.

If I turn the buyer down, how would you recommend I break it to him, since I said we had a deal?

I know he was looking forward to it, but he also knew nothing about Smart cars, except premium gas. He just wants it for a fun cruiser. Well, so did we.

Yeah, I just called and talked to family and a couple close friends, besides insight from you all. They said take the deal.

This is difficult and I will definitely miss her, but like you said, I gave him my word.

I can always get a newer model later. I just hope I can find one with lower miles, like a 2016- 2017 face-lift turbo.🚀

Just to clarify facelift happened for the 2013 model year. I think 2012 added knee airbags. 2016/2017 is a different model altogether.

Happy hunting!!!

We have decided to sell. It was a hard decision to make and we will miss our little Escape Pod. It will be odd, for a while, going into our garage not seeing it there, but we will move forward. We'll get another Smart when we no longer live in Minne-snow-ta.

I, personally, will also miss this great community of people, projects and ideas and I thank you all for the knowledge, humor and guidance along the way. I plan on keeping my account active for the future hope of an Escape Pod-2 453. Signing off for now. Thanks again!

Good one, "Hotel California" from back in the day (PAT pre-Auto-Tune) when instruments were played & voices were real . . .
