I've done quite a bit of searching and I've seen quite a few different answers. I'm looking at a smart car they're going to sell pretty cheap because they said the key fob broke and they can't start it. They said the car ran fine before they broke the key fob. Is there any checking I can do to make sure this is the problem or is there a way to disable the immobilizer. I'm very mechanically inclined if it can be done and I do not mind taking it to the Smart car dealership to be repaired. They said there's not one in their town and it has to go quite a distance and they don't have a trailer..

The car is on Facebook any input from somebody that knows more than me about these would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome!

I opened the link, that is a 450 model which wasn't sold here officially, but imported special by companies who then retrofitted them to conform to FMVSS standards.

Normally I would say go to the dealer, order a key per VIN, and verify it works. (This would be quite costly unfortunately). In this case I'm not sure if they can...

A normal M-B dealership WILL NOT touch a smart. Most of the smart centers that sold/serviced smarts
will not touch a 450.and are closing or already closed. As mentioned in the quote above that is a 450 smart. Normally I would tell you to "RUN, do not walk away from that car"!! Instead I suggest that you contact miss mercedes, a moderator here. She owns a 450 smart.........................

Contact this guy, he’s the expert on all model smart cars. Especially the 450. The 450 was never sold, except gray market one. By Windy City smart car. Long gone. They were sold in Canada too. Your best bet is the web page below, for any 450 information.

Leroy Williams, is the US expect, on the 450 here. I don’t know how to get a hold of that gentleman. He owned several 450’s, even a smart crossfire.

You are exactly right I called the Mercedes dealer and they said they cannot even get the key or the computer for it. It's not even available in Germany

The car isn't worth the $2800.00 what they're asking if they cannot prove or show you that it the engine starts and runs ( no smoke leaks etc.) And drives i.e. transmission is working.

Facts are these cars were and still are gray market cars.
NEVER imported or sold in the U.S. they never met U.S. safety and environmental standards.
Not all MB dealerships were on board selling, servicing and supplying parts for smarts. Of the legitimate 10 or less MB / smart dealers in the entire U. S. not one will touch that car.
Very few legitimate repair shops want or will work on these cars properly.
At $2800.00 once you get transport of the car and key fob, you're going to be into this experiment for over $3200.00 at that I'm being conservative. Then and only then will you get to see if it actually runs and drives. But that's ok the seller SAID it did. ;)
I live in Las Vegas. I can see a bad bet from a mile away. This city was built on bad bets and good feelings.
$$$ But heck it's only money $$$
Good luck and keep us updated.

I've taken in a few 450s.
No MB dealership will touch it because it's not in their computers.
You'll have to get a MB Star Diagnostic system from Europe, hopefully in english to solve this issue...
Just out of curiosity what would one of
those cost?

I got a MB Star system from the UK for around $1300 including a pre loaded laptop.
It's got the 450/451/453 through the 2018 0.9L turbo.
I have to bring it to an independent MB shop to get work done on the 450s...
