Battery went dead in smart car. Replaced with new battery. Still won't start. Have tested new battery and it reads good. Something had caused the old battery to pull dead. No current to anything in car with old battery. With new battery lights work and everything else works except when you turn the key to start you hear a click in the dash. The car does not engage the starter. Please advise?

No start:

Check & make sure the brake lights are working. If not, you have a defective brake light switch that will need replacing. Also, do a transmission re-teach. With selector in Park, turn key on, (#1 position) and move selector through the gears and back to park. Turn key off and then attempt to start car. If no luck, you might try disconnecting the battery for 30 min., reconnect, re-teach transmission, and then try and start.

Not sure how many miles are on your Smart, but a bad alternator will drain a battery. Had that happen in my 69 Mustang years ago. Something to check :)
