I recently purchased a used 2005 For Two Passion (European gas model). As soon as we got home the battery died and it was diagnosed with a bad alternator. We bought a used alternator off of the internet and took the car and parts to our local alternator repair facility. They installed the alternator (even though the back of the alternator was a bit different). We got the call that they couldn't start the car. It had one horizontal dash on the gear display on the dash. We called the local Smart Center (90 miles away) and they told us it was the gear disengaged symbol and to hold the brake for thirty seconds after you turn the key on. Needless to say this did not fix the problem. They then told us to unhook the battery for 30 minutes and it would clear the memory. No luck!!! We put the old alternator back in with the hope that the extra connector on the back may be messing it up somehow. Still no luck. We then towed the vehicle to the Smart Center. After two months we finally got word that they still hadn't fixed the car and the dealership was closing. The service manager took the car with him to the Honda dealership with the promise he would continue working on it. We are now at the three month mark and he no longer works at the Honda dealership and they have informed us they do not have a Smart mechanic (no pun intended there). They told us we would need to come pick up the car.

Any ideas on where we can go from here? I am sorely disappointed thus far with our dealings with Smart and anything to do with this car. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ken

Also, it's no wonder the guy was let go from the dealership. It wasn't the gear disengaged at all! I'm sorry to hear he wasted three months of your time and enjoyment with your car.

Sorry to hear about your less than stellar introduction to smart.

Suggest you contact G&K Automotive Conversion, Inc. who were the folks that brought the earlier model to the U.S.

Regards,

Dan
Yep, that may be your best bet. :( Anything prior to the new generation 2008 model was gray marketed here and is not officially supported by any US smart center or MB dealer. The cars were imported from another country and specially modified by G&K for sale in the US. A smart center will not have the parts, tools, or technical training to deal with the older, out of country 450 model much less the custom modifications made to the car by G&K.
