I just sold my 2009 Smart and bought a 2015 model. It's great, but I noticed that in place of the glove compartment, there is just an open cavity. I used the glove box for registration, phone cables, tire gauges, earphones, and a variety of other things. Has this bothered anyone else and what did you do about it? Are there inserts that fit in the space that include a door? I was thinking of getting a black plastic box, so things are somewhat hidden and also don't blow away when the windows are opened.

Thanks for the info. What is an ex cars2go Smart? Is it a stripped down version? Hope I didn't pay too much. I paid $7,500 and it only has 7,000 miles on it. It does have a touch screen and heated seats.

Cars2go smarts are specially optioned pures. It should have the 2 spoke steering wheel, solid roof, power windows and mirrors, Bluetooth aftermarket stereo, the steel wheels, no glovebox door, and usually white in color.

Nothing wrong with them. Just differently optioned than a pure or a passion,

Im pretty sure there are threads around here for adding a glovebox door to a car that didn’t have one. If you wanted to get crafty you could use a piece of felt or something and Velcro the corners in place to cover the cavity in the meanwhile. You could probably find something like a small lunch box that stuffs in the space too. I think your best bet is just eBaying a glovebox door and it’s parts and going for it. I know that’s one lacking option that would drive me nuts. I don’t think you overpaid for the car at all - and you can know you found something unique from the off-the-lot models.

The dash is unique to a Car2Go Smart. There is NO easy way to add a glove box to this car, short of changing out the dash. There are rubber mats that go in the bins to stop stuff from rolling around, but you'll have to figure another way to store stuff other than a glove box.

Someone else on this forum found a workaround by drilling bolts into the dash to hold in the replacement glovebox. I'll try to find the thread when I get to the office.

Here you go:

I have a car2go smart, so of course mine didn't come with glovebox either. I purchased a glovebox with surround for the regular dash smart online HERE.

My 30 minute install went like this...
- I removed the 2 upper dash pins.
- Removed the 2 pins from the glovebox door to remove it from the surround to be able to work with it easier.
- Dremel (with cut off wheel) the nubs off the bottom of the surround/insert.
- Test fit and dremel until it fit fairly well.
- Reinstall the glovebox door to the surround.
- Reinstall 2 upper dash pins.
- Sourced 2 self tapping screws from my box of overflow bits in the garage.
- Screwed from inside the insert (inside the glovebox) on the lower left and right hand sides (shallow screws) through the surround and into the dash sides.

Still need to get to the hardware store for a rubber plug to cover/fill where the lock tumbler would go.

Not fancy but it works, hope this helps.

Thanks for the information. I notice there is a USB port and another port (for headphones?) on the inside left of the glove box. Did you hook those up? After the existing cavity is removed, are there plugs under the dash to plug into the outside of the glove box? I see from some photos that there are receptacles for 2 plugs on the outside of the box.

I wasn't the person who did that mod. :) The non-Car2Go models have a USB port and aux jack in the glovebox. I'm not sure if the cables are just laying around in the dash of a Car2Go model or if you have to add them yourself. I vaguely remember it's the latter, but I'll check some threads.

This is nice. The Smart parts guy in Madison, WI told me there was no way to mount a glove box in a Car2Go Smart. I stand corrected.
There isn't an official way to mount a glovebox without getting a new dash...but they didn't say anything about DIY! >:D
