I have one of the cheapo OBDII bluetooth units and a couple of Android apps to read it with (Torque free and Dashcommand eval.). I'm kind of new to these type of apps and couldn't manage to get MPG values off of either. Torque free: couldn't find it anywhere. Dashcommand: no values would show on MPG gauge.

So my question: If one has the right hardware and software, does the Smart output MPG data to OBD?

Is the problem with my hardware dongle, software/settings or the Smart itself?

Nope. AFAIK devices like the UltraGauge and ScanGauge both calculate fuel economy numbers using their own metric.
