Not symmetrical...?

So after getting 185's on all corners, I've noticed there's a bit of wear on the inside of the left fender. I just finger-measured it, and it's about 1/4 inch closer to the wheel on the left side than the right. I double checked the backside to make sure it wasn't something wrong with the alignment or suspension and it's spot-on. So the fender well is slightly smaller on the left than right side on my Smart car? WTF? Is this going to cause premature wear on the tyres? Should I maybe cut it down now before it wears anymore? Thanks.
