Smart recommends full synthetic oil. I use Mobil 1 0W40 with the Mobile 1 oil filter model M108. You can buy that at most Wal Marts and they regularly run sales on the Mobile 1 products.
That's good to know. With regular oil on my other car I tend to change every 5000 miles. With full synthetic oil, I'd image I could go a lot longer between changes. How often do you change your oil, every 8000 miles or less..? I? just got the car and I want to make sure I get started with the right blend..

8000...way less, since the total mileage is just over 5000. I change my oil once a year, no matter the mileage. Last year, I had a lot of medical issues and only drove it 26 miles. I still crank it up and let it get to operating temperature once a week and run the a/c to keep the seals lubricated.

I remember that you had a 2009 Brabus still in like new condition with around 5000 miles (?). I think for me it'll be twice a year for changing the oil as I won't be putting much mileage on mine, just short trips around the city so mileage won't factor in. I'm thinking it best then to go with the synthetic oil and filter like you're using..

I see you're in Jacksonville, FL how do you like living in Florida. I had a BIL and sister living in New Port Richey (they've both passed on) and a buddy of mine owned a home on a canal lot on Anna Maria Island not far from Tampa. As I get older these cold winters don't agree with me as much as when I was younger. I was planning to head to Florida with my camper for the winter just before this COVID hit and then plans got changed as a result..

The oil change interval recommend by Smart is every 10,000 miles or 365 days, whichever happens first. Smart recommends Mobil 1 synthetic, 0W-40 for people living in most regions of the world.

The OP should be prepared for the agony of changing the service interval reminder:

:)
Good video. It seems like it resets a lot quicker if you start the engine for the last step. Important part is to keep the left cluster button depressed when you turn the key back on and in the video, he started the engine and the light immediately reset.

Canadian Tire has Motomaster 0W-40 and 5W-40…

Oil should meet Mercedes Benz 229.5 specification…

The same oil is bottled as Shell Helix, Quaker State Euro, and Pennzoil Euro…

Oil filter for the 451 Smart is a Fram 6607 size,
but a Fram 7317 is a third longer, and has same base and bypass…
You need exactly four quarts when using the longer filter…

I use a Wix 51356 XP from RockAuto, just watch the shipping costs…

Thanks much for the info, very helpful..!! When using the third longer Fram 7317, there isn't any interferences encountered anywhere..? Using exactly 4 US quarts would be better/easier for adding oil without overfilling or being careful not to overfill. Are they readily available off the shelf or special order..? You mention using exactly 4 quarts, is that 4 US quarts or 4 CDN liters..? One Canadian liter equals 1.056688 US quarts..

Edit: I just checked out Canadian Tire for the Fram 7317 oil filter and it came up that they won't fit my 2010 Smart..? It showed as being available but not for my 2010 Smart. Is this something that's compatible just not recommended..? It did list the Fram XG6607 Ultra Synthetic Oil Filter as being suitable..

No problems using the long filter.

Use a 2021 Honda Insight to see all the 7317 sized filters…

Looks like the jug is 5 liters, the bottles are quarts (946 milliliters) in Canada…
Even though the Fram XG7317 Ultra Synthetic Oil Filter is listed "This product does not fit you 2010 Smart Fortwo", it will work..? You have used this before without issue..?

Works just fine…
Thanks much for your help. I saw that on Canadian Tires' website they listed their Motormaster Premium 0W40 5 liter Synthetic Motor Oil at $35.99 CDN (sale 45% off). In the USA at Autozone they're selling the Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 0W40 5 quart for $36.99 US, best deal is in Canada.

I'll buy both now to stock up for my next oil change, good deal..
