Only at MB Service Dept?

What are common fixes that a smart car may need that can only be adequately performed by a smart service center at Mercedes Benz? Assume the warranty has been used up and the owner is not able to perform own work.

Are there services that run-of-the-mill independent mechanics cannot do or shouldn't attempt on a smart car? Probably issues dealing with aspects of smartshift transmission, DCT, software, salvaging badly damaged vehicles, and the 453 gas tank / gauge. What is other common work on smart cars that can only be adequately performed by the MB Service Department?

Common service - oil changes, brake work, exhaust work, etc. can be done at any good auto repair shop. If it involves on board electronic and computer work it would take a very well equipped and trained specialist shop to do the work if you don't want to use a dealership. Just my .02. :)

Thanks.

Just wondering if there are any common repairs that only M-B service departments can adequately handle.

EDIT: "common" is referring to repairs which could occur as the car ages (mechanical breakdowns, ignition system, electrical, fuel system, A/C system failure).

Might need to define "common" but I can't think of any exclusive to a smart dealership. :)

depends on the shop, their equipment, and personnel. There are quite a few diagnostics machines out there that will do just about as much as the MB STARR, Snap-on and Autel both make a really good unit, they aren't cheap so it would be a shop that does lots of foreign cars, and possibly employs some ex-MB mechanics that probably could rival the dealership Ask for references and if they have worked on your type of car before, and if they have the technology for it.

Even be cautious of brakes, tires and oil change places. They can make a mess of a simple job and it can cost a bucket of cash to fix it.
