Mystery Run 2014
and
Celebration of the 10th Anniversary of smart in Canada

August 2nd and 3rd, 2014
Trenton, Ontario

What is the Mystery Run?
The Mystery Run is a follow-the-leader smart rally. The catch? You only know the start and end locations! Along the way, we'll make make several stops at different locations you may or may not have known were in the area. This is the 6th year of the Mystery Run.

10th Anniversary of Smart
That's right! The first ship-load of smarts arrived in Halifax on August 6th,, 2004, and the first customer delivery was September 23rd, 2004. That means 2014 is the tenth anniversary of smart in Canada! Mercedes-Benz Canada will be contributing stuff to the event, so stay tuned for more details on that.

Event Schedule
Let's be honest here – I'm still at the ideas stage for this. However, I would like to start the run from Trenton at around 10 AM on August 2nd. This means you will probably want to arrive Friday evening. There are no plans for Friday evening, so you can arrive as late as you want. The main event (as we've had in previous years), dinner, and prizes will be on Saturday. There will then be a short run with one or two stops Sunday morning, and then the plan is to end the event sometime in the early afternoon on Sunday. This should give most participants the ability to get home on Sunday as well.

Once details start to get firmed up, I'll keep you in the loop.

Lodging
I'm recommending you stay at either the Trenton Comfort Inn, or the Ramada Inn Trenton. I haven't made group reservations, as it ends up being more expensive for you in the end. Here's what I would recommend doing:

-If you are certain you are going to be attending, make your reservations now, as early as possible. If you book at the Ramada, there is an even cheaper option if you pay online in advance.
-If you aren't certain you are going to be attending, make a reservation anyway. You can always cancel your reservation when you make up your mind.

Hotels could fill up quickly at any moment, as the area is a hot tourist destination. Make your reservations early!

Costs
At this point, I don't know if there will be a need for a sign-up cost. If there is, it won't be a lot (I'd be aiming for $10, $20 at most), and as usual, it will only be what is actually necessary for our stops. Payment will be cash on the day of the tour.

Shirts
I'll talk to Tardis about having some Mystery Run shirts made up again. Shirts at the 4th run were $12 a piece, but the price is entirely up to her. Watch this space!

Saturday Dinner
TBD. Will be followed by the distribution of door prizes, and a raffle for a big prize (100% of raffle money will go to charity)

Sunday Lunch
TBD

Thanks John! His sign-up should make it obvious, but in case it wasn't clear:

This event is completely open to any US smarties that want to participate. Obviously you'll need a passport to cross the border, but beyond that, no restrictions! MB won't be checking passports to determine whether or not you get stuff :)

4 signed up now, still 2 tentative.

There's lots of good stuff coming from MB Canada for this event. Sign up early and book your rooms! I realize this is still pretty far away, so if you aren't sure you'll be coming, feel free to send along a "tentative" sign-up. It'll help with coordination and planning.

We've got 10 confirmed, 4 tentative now. Shirt Info!

Looks like I can't edit my first post anymore, so I'll add this shirt info down here:

Tardis will be making shirts for the Mystery Run again this year! The colour of the shirt will remain a mystery, but the design will be basically the same as it was in 2012. The price for each shirt will be going up to $17 a piece, as we will be getting better quality shirts than last time. Shirts must be ordered in advance, with a cut-off date of July 20th, 2014 (So that there is time to embroider them!). Please send a message to Tardis or me if you would like to get a shirt! There's a picture below of what the 2012 shirt looked like.

In addition, I got a Square Credit Card reader, so I should be able to accept payment by credit card as well, adding on a 2.75% fee.

Raffle Prize announcement!

The city’s always on the move, which is why the smart electric bike was designed to make getting around urban areas easier than ever before. The smart electric bike combines clever functions with advanced technology and outstanding design, making your journey more enjoyable and easier. Electric motor assistance helps you as you pedal, providing you with the energy you need to reach your destination.

You can win the smart electric bike at this year’s Mystery Run! Generously donated by smart Canada, the smart electric bike will be raffled to one lucky winner and all proceeds generated will be donated to Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre to help rehabilitate injured and orphaned wildlife. Pretty impressive prize considering the price of those bikes. Kudos to smart Canada - maybe smart USA will take notice. :)

In other news, I've now made an inital route for Saturday and Sunday. Both routes still need to be test run, as I think I might be using some gravel roads at the moment. It's currently looking like a 10 AM departure on Saturday, and 9 AM on Sunday (Need to see if I can optimize this so we can start a little bit later), possibly with no entrance fee.

Hotel Info (All prices are in CAD):
------------------------------------------------------

Looks like the Ramada price per night has gone up to $102.85 a night if you pay in advance or $121 a night if you just reserve.

Comfort Inn has rooms ranging from $89 a night (Smoking room or handicap accessible), $98 a night (2 doubles, or queen, drive-up rooms) if you pay in advance - just making a reservation adds about $16 a night

I think Turbomar mentioned that he's stayed at the Trenton Travelodge and it wasn't too bad. It looks like you can get rooms from between $100 and $110 paying in advance, or $118 to $128 reserving.

An interesting one, is the Canadas Best Value Inn Trenton (I didn't realize there was a Canadian version of that chain as well), which seems to have a smart in it's picture! It has a king bed room from $84 a night, or a two queen bed room for $95.95 a night, and those don't even seem to be pay in advance rates!

There are some other hotels too without online booking, but TripAdvisor.ca seems to indicate the following possible prices:
-Trenton Park Motel - $88 a night
-Bayside Motel - $85 a night
-Guest Inn - $80 a night

Jwight also mentioned that it might be possible for members/former members of the forces to stay at CFB Trenton somehow. I'm not really sure of the details, but if that is in any way applicable to someone, he seemed to have some info.

I've personally looked in the Ramada and Comfort Inn rooms and they seemed good. The other hotels could be good, could be bad. When I do my test run in a week or two, I may poke my head into the Travelodge and the Best Value Inn.

I've had a few people ask me about starting locations now. I need to make sure they will actually work, but here's my tentative starting locations and times:

Saturday:
Tim Hortons at 11 Monogram Place, Trenton. We will be trying to get on the road by 10, so please arrive a little before that.

Sunday:
Walmart Parking Lot at 471 2nd Dughill Road, Trenton. We'll try to be on the road by 9 on Sunday, so again, arrive before that.

I'll be seeing if there's a way I can get the Sunday start time to push out a bit, but I think that might be the only working start time if I've got us doing the stuff I have planned. The Saturday start location is pretty firm. I need to go for a bit of a drive around that Walmart area though - there might be a better spot to start.
