I have been posting on one of the other threads about building a custom kit to connect to our Smart ED's ODBII port for remotely monitoring our battery, along with monitoring many more things. This kit is being discussed on the German forum site, http://www.goingelectric.de and the primary developers are forum members Erich and Bumaus. It looks like a very versatile and potential powerful kit, however it currently requires building the kit ourselves.

At the same time, the Open Vehicle Monitoring System (OVMS) initiative has just added support for our Smart ED in the last month.

Here's a full description of the OVMS platform:

Their kits are pre-assembled and available for purchase here:

Right now, I plan on purchasing a Wifi-only OVMS kit and seeing if that fits my needs. I will post updates here.

Does anyone know if you could activate the preconditioning from the app? That is pretty much the main reason I would do it.

In talking with Martin, not yet, but it's high on his priority list.

I've got one of these OVMS units and an evilution site subscriber called Fran (who knows what he's doing) has got it working on the 451 ED.
Once I get mine working and on the website, hopefully other people will be able to chip in and help the project.

We should definitely collaborate. Martin Graml and I are in email contact and have begun to talk about how I can help. The current "internal" web site code that runs on the module (which allows configuration from a web browser) is fairly simple. I have offered to enhance the site and possibly port functionality over from the very feature rich Twixy version of the firmware for the module.

UPDATE: I got my module in over the weekend. I've configured it to use the default settings and for use with my Smart ED. Waiting on the cable to actually connect it to my Smart.

Ok. I got the ODB2 to DB9 cable today and plugged it into the OVMS module and into the ODB port in my Smart.

See the following attachments for screenshots from my phone showing the OVMS Dashboard web page (hosted by the actual module) and then the screenshots from the OVMS application on my phone.

Some of the gauges aren't having their data shown yet.

The battery charging level gauge is awesome, but it's time to extend this functionality to show more things being transmitted over the Can bus and received by the OVMS module.

Time to start some programming!

Hi everyone,

I got my EQ ForTwo at the beginning of the month.
The OVMS/EU module arrived yesterday and I configured it on my desk, including connection to the European server, Hologram SIM, latest firmware OTA, Android app and the car. Well, except the car, because I couldn't find even the Renault Zoe in the list. I then tried it in the car, with all the models in the list. It did periodically turn on the charge indicator pod near the A pillar, by itself, when I chose "OBDII" as car model.

Yeah, I knew what models are supported, when I ordered it. Still ordered, because smart connect is not available in my country, plus I'd love to tinker with it - if/when I had the time. So much more can be done with this.

I'm fairly familiar with embedded Linux, I've also done my share of compiling stuff, but maybe I'd be better off if I asked you guys:

How do I get the Renault Zoe, heaven forbid the smart_ed, in the vehicles list? Although, it seems that Martin's smarted is the 451 model, while the 453 is Renault.

I saw some mk/h/cpp files for these vehicles, on the github page. I understand that for the smart 453, people are just beginning to look at the code, but I see you guys (well, mainly martin and mcowher) working with it and coming up with actual results.

Do I need to install the Expressif toolkit and get codin'? I wish I had the time.

Oh, and I have access to DDT4all with the 2018-09 database, if it helps, and the OBDLink LX should arrive any day now.
I have very little spare time these days, but I can check stuff, if you need me to.

Thank you.

I'm using OVMS every day to remotely monitor my charge status. I share a charger with 2 coworkers, so it's very helpful to be able to remotely check the charge level. I'm in regular contact with Martin, the original guy to setup our car in OVMS, and I have a few code changes to add. I hope to complete them in the next week and get them committed to GitHub.
