First question strangers usually ask about my Smart is what kind of mileage it gets. I think the real question they don’t want to ask is why a big guy like me would drive such a small car unless it gets really amazing mileage.

OK, I'm just under 6'1" myself, but I told someone just yesterday that my seat wasn't even all the way back. :D I think I have relatively short arms though. Whatever, there's still more than enough stretching room for my legs though!

I've carried passengers of all shapes and sizes, from as tall as 7 feet to as big as 450 pounds. Every single one of them was blown away at how much space are in these cars. Even the 450 can swallow a lot of human. :D

Must have been one hell of a lot of wind to blow away the 450 pounder. :)

I'm 6'4", big boned and a little "fluffier" than you with a 36" inseam. I fit just fine and it's probably the easiest car to get in and out of I've ever owned.

that was the big sell point for me, the car is so darned easy to get in and out of.... no other car comes close until you get in a full sized truck or van.

Absolutely! When I open the door so someone can see inside, they are almost always shocked that the sides of the car are essentially all door! Compared the door size of other cars, that are downright huge.

The smart is also a taller vehicle. Parked next to most other cars, the smart is small in comparison, but the roofline of the smart is higher than most other cars. This translates into a surprisingly spacious amount of headroom.

.... and you tell the it's because it's so much fun to drive. Right? People are always amazed when I tell them it's built for a 6'8" person. Then I show them the inside.

Exactly! I tell them straight out that I didn't get it for its fuel economy, but that it's so much fun to drive. Most people seem to think because it's half the length of a normal car it should also use half the fuel, forgetting that it still has four wheels, and pretty wide, big ones for such a small car at that, and that its short length really messes up the drag coefficient as well...:|

Please be honest! (Should I buy a smart?)
Not if you are wanting one for parking or even fuel mileage. But if you want to smile every time you get behind the wheel then go for it.
Do your due diligence and understand what you are getting into, very few people buy these cars, they lease them and that's why you see a flood of used ones on the market. If you don't know the workarounds they'll bleed you dry and after awhile that smile goes to a frown.

Same thing with electric cars, no one buys you lease because from the moment they install the batteries at the factory they are dying. A 3 year lease then get the hell out of it and into a new one. Let the next poor sucker behind you drop some serious repair coin on it.

But back to your Smart question, just understand who makes it and it starts at $25 dollars for them to say hello to you. And if you are forced into using them bring a jar of Vaseline, it's design to forever have their hands in your pockets.

I own one because I like to roll outside of what society considers normal and there will never, ever be another car like the Smarts, ever in America again.
Read that again out loud to yourself.
