Help needed, we have a 2013 Smart with the High Line Radio / Nav etc. Bought it to tow behind our Mercedes RV. Did every thing I should when flat towing, installed a battery disconnect, lights etc. First trip, towed perfect, did the reset procedure radio came up with code required, 0000 no good 1234 no good, could not contact previous owner, he had passed away. Radio then came up with Radio Blocked contact Dealer. I called Smart they advised to contact local dealer ( 250 mile round trip ) Went to Mercedes north Houston, Oh we don't know how to do that, we will have to run a diagnostic check $198.00 if it can be reset the another $99.00 if not replace Radio $750 plus. Wrong answer ! I contacted Smart Again advising what had taken place, they advised to contact another dealer in Austin I did that ( 400 mile round trip ) talking with the service department, don't know how to do that ! " we will get back to you, 6 weeks later still waiting )

I have been in the Automotive industry for over 50 years, working all over the world as a Stylist / Clay modeler. Designing and building Concept Vehicles for most of the major manufacturers including Mercedes in Europe. Have all the tech gear ( Snap on OBD2 Reader etc ) am disgusted that Mercedes dealers haven't had the necessary product training, to do simple reflash and reset the radio bios. Any one have any ideas apart from buying an aftermarket radio, I did try to purchase an OEM unit but the same thing will happen .

It may be possible there is a sticker somewhere on the car with the code . Had that on another one of my cars and I had to remove the inside cover in the rear to retrieve the number. The problem is knowing where it is located.

Might end up being less expensive to install an aftermarket radio or find out who built the radio for the High Line model. If it is a code made up by the previous owner, you may be out of luck (sorry to say) Either way, to have the dealer string you along for 6 weeks without even a call saying they can't help is unacceptable. I would give Smart Madness a try, they might know !

Personally, if you feel the price too much. Having MB located your radio code. Sounds like they can’t, or have the ability. I would go to Crutchfield.com and purchase an aftermarket radio. better quality better features lower cost. In today’s world. Nobody really fixes, sound systems in cars anymore. The dealers use to send them out to a radio shop, to be fixed. Manly if the vehicle was still under warranty. At over $110 bucks a hour. To remove, and replace the radio at the dealer. Plus the cost of repair. It just doesn’t make sense to mess with a OEM radio.

Too bad the last owner pass away.
