I had to change my battery after coming home from a long vacation, when the new battery was put in, my radio asked for a passcode, now it's telling me to call my service person, I live on an Island, we do not have a "Smart Car" service facility. Can anybody tell me what my next move is??? it's a 2014 gas smart car
thank you

You can try '1234' or '0000'... That was the factory default security numbers on the 451's for years.

Sometimes you may find a card tucked in the handbook or service book, which has the key code and radio security code. You're supposed to remove it and keep it in a safe place, but no one ever does.

Failing that, you'll probably have to visit a dealer. They'll likely want to see proof that you own the vehicle before handing over a code.

Maybe this will help. I found a company that lists codes for smart radios based upon model.

In the UK Smart dealers charge £20 to look up the radio code for your car, after proof of identity that you own the car. I never had the code when i bought my 451 secondhand, it got lost by the first owner, so had to pay up.

On the 453 there is no code, so no problems. I own the basic radio (Passion model) and not a DAB screen radio/sat nav unit (on higher trim models), so no worries about anyone stealing a basic radio, as its (errm!) so basic :p

Don't believe the Becker and Grundig radios were used in North American smarts....

I cannot say, but my intent was to provide widest breadth of information, since some people may visit Europe and return with gray market radios.

Folks,
All the items that we have learned about the radio issues would make a great DIY sticky. Can we get the forum deities to make this happen?
