Is Smart purposely understating the average mpg or l/100km in their specs?
I recall Hyundai low-balling the MPG on several of their models which ended up settling with a class action lawsuit, owners ended up getting a prepaid credit card for each year they own the car (my daughter is one).

I'm asking because I have a friend who has a 2014 Smart Pure, on a full tank, one passenger, he can make it from Burlington to Parry Sound and back. He's no speed demon and drives "mildly". I can certainly see a diesel doing this, too bad that is no longer an option for new Smart's, but realistically, what do you think about Smart's mileage ratings? What do you think a typical tank of good fuel will get you? Very broad question, people drive different, city versus hwy, temperatures, etc. But is there an appreciable average?

Google Maps says that's around 273 km, so 546 km both ways.

In summer, no problem. 5.5 L/100 km will use 30 litres of fuel. It has a 33 litre tank.

In winter, 6 L/100 km, it will be on fumes.

Both of those consumption figures are easily achievable without doing anything unusual.

It has a lot more to do with the EPA & Euro test cycles than anything. I feel the current EPA numbers are way low. With over 166K miles on the clock, my 08 smart has very consistently averaged 43 mpg. If I was getting the EPA estimate, I would be ticked... In fact, the smart is the only car I know that can pretty consistently beat the EPA estimates.

Oh, and as far as Hyundai goes, they over-stated their mpg's, not understated them. That's why they paid out $$$$. I don't think anybody has ever complained about a car doing better than advertised...

My bad, yes, I meant that, just using the term in reference to something nefarious or devious, but you are correct for sure.

This thread is old but hey... Why not chime in anyway!?!

I just ran my 2013 Smart Pure for 500km with 1/2 highway and 1/2 city. When I filled it up, it went up to 30l so had 3l left in the tank.
I do run on 91 octane and I've heard that makes a difference. And I don't drive slow... Highway speeds are usually anywhere between 110-120kph.
I'm sure I can reach 600+ driving 110kph or less only on the highway.

Regarding the smart fuel numbers... Those, from any manufacturer, are always best case scenario lab figure and never reflect real world conditions so you should always take them with a grain of salt.
They are a guideline... Not gospel! :)

I'm averaging 300km on half a tank of premium but running 120-140 kph on the autoroute. If I were to lighten my foot I suspect it will be a lot better as the car wants to cruise happily at 110-120 kph. Gas is roughly 1.80 euro per litre at the Total station. Back home I'm running about 370ish km on half a tank with a lot of fast highway and country roads but at least gas is a lot cheaper there, just before I left it was around $1.28 CDN though Costco was around $1.10 but never tried their premium, prefer to run Shell.

City-only driving (between 0 km/h and 70 km/h), around 400 km to the tank. Sometimes ~450 km. This is the same for pretty much all my Smarts, of which I have 5.
