Oddly enough, the 2014s have lower mileage (6000 to 9000 miles) since they were primarily used in Columbus, Ohio and Washington D.C.
The 2015s were purchased for the New York City market which had greater demand and use. Unfortunately these also have a bit more scuffs and scrapes than the 2014s which only averaged about 2,000 to 3,000 miles a year. Those older models were also usually driven longer distances as well so long story short, the 2014 models appear to be the better buy right now.
I ended up buying 20 Smarts here in Atlanta and I'm also going to be writing about my experience selling these cars for one of the major automotive publications. In the beginning I bought a few 2015 models and sold them reasonably quick. But it seems like the cosmetic condition of the 2014 models is making them an easier sale overall.
If you ever wanted to buy the last of the Smarts, they frankly aren't going to be any cheaper given the mileage. I'm finding that $6000 is a nice sweet spot for the 2014s. If you're in the midwest, Texas will likely soon be flooded with these vehicles and Riverside, California is handling the west coast inventory. Atlanta is the East Coast location and I'm finding that the upgrades to the CAR2GO versions of the Smart have a healthy audience out here.
