So I had a noise coming from my right front tire yesterday while traveling home from work. It sounded like a scraping noise and I noticed the right front rim was much hotter then the rest of the rims. It was more pronounced when I hit the brakes. I took the wheel off today fully expecting to replace the brake pads. The pads look fine but there is a ton of dust on the rim. I also noticed that while I could spin the rotor by hand it rubbed the pads pretty good in spots. Warped rotor maybe? Has anyone else experienced this? I love the car but it makes weird noises! The whine backing up. The "clatters of the transmission. The odd sounding 3 cylinder with a slight tick at idle. Am I just too tuned in to the little car?

On a side note I popped off the stock hubcaps and really am digging the look of my 2013 pure sans hubcaps

Paint the Smart emblem on the center cover (silver circle with yellow arrow) and it will really pop!!

The stock brake pads are terrible for creating a lot of dust. Best thing to do is to change them out for a set of ceramic pads (got mine from O'Rieleys Auto Parts) and the dust problem will go away. the noise you are hearing is either flash rust (also common) or a hard spot on the rotor. gets that way from a hard stop and sitting with the brakes applied. Usually when I stop. I come to a stop, then roll ahead a bit so the rotors have a chance to be exposed to cool air where the stop ended. Works for me anyhow.

Both my front brakes have been scraping occasionally ever since the car was new. At first, I was pretty annoyed. Especially in the ED, this was the loudest noise by far when rolling along a quiet road. Note that my noise is happening when the brakes are not applied.

MB tried fixing it a couple of times - they did some fiddling first, then replaced the rotors. No significant change. They gave up. I eventually accepted that it may just be a "feature" of the floating caliper design.

This sounds like pads sticking, might be rust where the pads contact their retaining clips/holders. When was the last brake job done? Rotors rusty or if the car has been sitting is there a patch of rust about where the pads were sitting? Might just need to sand the rough spots off however if the wheel feels a lot warmer or you get a funny burning smell then it is likely sticky pads.

We get that a lot up here due to all the salt on the roads cauinge extensive rusting plus as other have mentioned the OEM pads aren't the greatest.
