Has anyone else experienced this type of seat belt failure in their SmartCar?

This is my 2nd Smart Passion (2008 & 2013). Never seen an it. It only has 30000 miles and I'm the original owner.

I tried to look at the SmartUSA Recalls, but the site is not working.

Oh my. I've never seen that before. I have a 2012 with just short of 116,000 miles. The cables to my driver's seatbelt looks fine. Judging from the heavy scratching on your seat frame, I wonder if the cables on yours were rubbing and finally gave way? Or maybe some critter chewing on them?

Why does it look like it was rubbing against the seat frame until bare metal shows? Am I the only one to notice???

To me it looks like it failed where the cable is either pressed into the ferrule or metal is poured around the cable to make the joint. It's common for cables to fail in this area when being flexed day in day out. Although I do not think a cable as important this one should fail, ever.

I checked mine out yesterday, it wouldn't be possible for the cable to rub on that scratched frame surface without being stretched at least an inch. However, I do believe seatbelts and safety equip are warrantied to 80k, so you should be good to get that fixed. :)

I love this forum. My 2008 Pure had a seat-belt problem a couple years ago, seat-belt buckle would not seat & latch. Visually obvious. The smart dealership insisted that a $300 diagnostic must be performed prior to any consideration of the problem & remedy. Many here said the safety issue should be addressed under manufacturers warranty (though well beyond the 2 yr warranty). I raised HECK by escalating it beyond the dealer to MB. Eventually got the diagnostic fee waived & labor waived if I'd pay for the part. I reluctantly agreed (limited other options) as my granddaughter was driving it at college. Complaining here alone has no affect on Smart/MB. Only complaints registered with NHTSA will accumulate enough weight & attention to affect a recall. It takes 10 minutes, & if every complainer took the time to complain where it has the best likelihood of benefit, we could actually have a chance for a recall. YES, we are not a large numbers of complaints, but as a PERCENTAGE OF OWNERS AFFECTED, WE ARE LARGE. I own TWO 2008 ForTwos, 100% (both) have had unreliable transmission behavior getting into or out of gear (I have to pay for a firmware update to fix the behavior?), 100% have seat-belt failure, 100% have had seats that stopped adjusting forward/rearward travel. Now one leaks fuel from a hole in the plastic pan, which many of you have already experienced. Failure of a G&K modified gas tank or is it the fuel pump? Don't know yet, but this fire hazard safety issue crosses the threshold into really unhappy ownership. I think I'll start a fresh thread encouraging NHTSA reports as a catalyst for recalls.

2008 models (451) were not modified by G&K, only the earlier 450 models. Most owners are happy with their cars, a few have had issues and usually the dealership does pony up for the repairs. Some have had to escalate to MB or smartUSA and those have been taken care of (I believe) nothing wrong with reporting to the NHTSA, but from what I have seen, that does not automatically light up a recall.

Looking at where the paint was scraped to raw metal on the frame, two possibilities come to mind . .

1. Are you particularly skinny, so that the belt would be pulled against the frame?

2. Are you buckling the belt behind you?

Got it. Person driving is short, moving seat to the front most position may cause rubbing. (No smart to test though....)

2008 smart. Our seat belt wouldn't latch. Repair 5 years out of warranty. Our state covers all safety restraints, for a period of 10 years, unlimited mileage. Any brand, vehicle. Check your dealership, for coverage in your state.
