I noticed my passenger blinker was doing double-time so I checked my lights and the side turn signal was out.

I can remove the round cylinder unit (sort of a tuna can shape) by twisting it and pulling it out. The unit appears impenetrable though...

Am I supposed to be able to open the plastic casing to replace a bulb or do I need to replace the whole unit? I couldn't find another one at my local auto parts store. Is it a MB special? There's a lot of info on front and rear turn signal replacement but I couldn't find anything on side ones.

Any help would be appreciated! thanks

Are these the lights just in front of the doors, or the ones in the headlights?

Look at the eighth and ninth pictures from the top for the side lights:

yeah a canadian 450 cabrio.

Maybe you can see if the wires are splice down the line..

they're stock for canadian smarts i believe. i don't want to remove or replace them i'm just wondering where to buy a replacement. from the looks of things it's a simple plug in the back for wiring. should be an easy fix if i could just find where to get the light.

"ideal for marine or open style trailers" ha! perhaps i was in the wrong section at the local auto shop.

i'll stop at a larger store on my way home from work tonight.

Yup, many Canadian 450 owners replace them with clear LEDs (that light up orange).

The whole orange unit gets turfed out...

Question from a 451 owner ...

I attempted to replace my side marker lights with LEDs. It resulted in hyperflashing of the turn signals.

Not true with the 450?

**UPDATE**

Turns out that side light is not a blinker at all. It's a side marker light. After turning on my blinker and noticing it wasn't flashing, I assumed it was the burnt out turn signal.

The actual problem was one of the two bulbs that make up my right rear signal light.

Reading this guide to replacing it now.

Many Canadians have altered the front side markers so they blink alternately with the turn signals and still work as side markers. There is a "how to" on the clubsmartcar.com forum about this. It's a five minute job per side, with the nose panel off.
