I noticed how black the marker lens looks against the white paint so I though I would remove them and clean the dirt out and put in new bulbs. I couldn't figure out how to remove them without breakage and also could not find anything on a search

They are held in place by a clip. If you release the fender a bit, you can push on the spring from the door jamb and release the light.

you mean pull the black fender clip out by the hinges to make the fender loose enough to reach in and push the assy out?

Yes. I used a long screwdriver to depress the clip part of the lens assy and it pops right out.

The clips that hold in the lights mounted just in front of the doors can be depressed through the door hinge opening. Just open the door a bit, look in the opening to to accommodate the hinge and use a long screwdriver to press the clip and push outward. No damage to the panels or bulb housings and no need to loosen body panels.

I see now that the backside of the marker lite assembly is black and all this time I thought it was either dirt or a discolored bulb or both

I have seen some that were a silver color and some that were black.
