Wow, I didn't realize how badly smart goofed up the roof rail storage compared to my 2008.


I agree! When I saw that I thought the same thing! I love how my side rails store discreetly in the tailgate. I’m sure there’s an engineering reason behind the new design, but I don’t think I’d enjoy losing cargo space, or dealing with the straps.

I may have posted this before or maybe someone else has but this was the review that really got me excited about the Smart ED before I purchased one this past summer.


It's an enjoyable viewing if not overly technical it gives a good overall review of the car.

Probably the only engineering reason for it is that thicker A and B pillars provide more safety, which in turn made the roof rails larger, too.
