I was told by a Mercedes dealership in Phoenix that my 2017 had to have been shipped over seas to the US because they were not avail able for purchase in the US until 2008. I would like to use my car behind my Class C motor home but had conflicting answers about being able to do that. The Mercedes gal told me no way shoudl this 2007 be flat towed. Then I have seen Youtubes with Smarts being towed but nothing was said about the year. Does anybody out there have any knowledge on this question? I would apprciate any input. Thanks

The 2007 was never officially imported by Mercedes/Daimler. They were brought in by a company that refitted them to make them comply with U.S. regulations and sold for a fairly high price. We do know that second gen 451 can be flat towed but that doesn’t mean the same is true for the first gen.

Penske group imported the 1st smart cars here in 2008. I believe The Canadian market had the 2007 451 before us. My Canadian neighbor, saw 450’s running around Manitoba Canada.
I seen in action, a 451 towed behind a large RV.

MY07 450 would be a EURO model that may have been “imported” and modded to meet safety requirements for US or Canada?

Note, 450 had a different transmission than the 451

As such you should apply “flat tow” recommendations for the 450 not the 451.

Here’s a previous thread on flat tow..,
