Smart 451 5th gear 70 mph

Hi,

I recently purchased a smart 451 late 2008
Actuator has been changed 6000 miles ago and just had a new clutch fitted but I still have the same issue, the car can’t go over 70mph in 5th gear but can in 4th. You can accelerating Past 70mph in 5th but it will only Rev then past the 70 Mark. If you keep the accelerator down the car changes down to 4th gear and 5th disappears until car is turned off.
I have code scanned after a motorway run and have two codes<img src="http://smartcarofamerica.com/forums/images/smilies/tongue.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Stick Out Tongue" class="inlineimg" />1905 p1800

Thanks

Wow, this is a strange one. Almost sounds like you have a speed governor installed. I don't think its the clutch slipping, because it would probably do that in 4th also.
Sounds electronic to me, maybe the ESP system.
I looked but could not find the codes you listed on the evolution site.... might have to go to a dealer, or find someone with a MBstar reader.
Best of luck, keep us informed.
I would try a reset, maybe disconnect the battery for an hour and try it again. The generic OBDII code have those numbers but it does say they are brand specific so their descriptions may not be correct. Maybe as a starting point, clean all the ground connections you can find, and check for water inside a connector (??) strange codes!

Possibly the engine is down on power and needs the higher revs of 4th gear to surpass 70mph. Dirty air filter?

Car has had a recent service with all oils and filters changed. Thinking to pull out the esp fuse and try.
"new clutch fitted" might be the issue. If there are no OBD codes then there's no reason the car shouldn't reach 90 mph in 5th gear. Possible clutch slipping? :)

New clutch was fitted as I thought thats what the issue was ??*♂ But still doing the same thing just checking gearbox number to see if somebody has put the wrong gearbox in.
How is this issue working out. I am interested in the clutch work that was done.

Hello guys,

same problem with my smart 451.Changed the clutch and the whole gearbox. Anything new for this problem?
I can think of two scenarios…

When changing the clutch, there is a Xentry procedure for learning the clutch drag position. I wonder if this wasn’t done.

The accelerator pedal in the smart is not mechanically connected to the drivetrain - it’s all electrical. If the pedal and/or lockdown switch have developed issues, it might effect the shift points.
for me the problem was that the gearbox was not good ... i had 61hp gearbox on 84hp ... sry for my english =P
