There is a radio software update to get your iPhone to work properly with the smart radio. Mine would link by Bluetooth to the radio but drop regularly. Since the update it’s worked perfectly for 4 or so years. Update only available through a Benz dealer who services smarts. Don’t know if this update will resolve your issue but it’s worth a check.

Not that I know of. Always use my phone in the factory radio holder.Thank you! Does it mirror the navigation as well?
