Ok....I don't get it....I have a 2002 smart passion...I did a 2 hour journey on a full tank, and only one bar on the electronic gauge went down. I thought, wow that's amazing!

I drove around a little more here and there, then the bars just dropped and dropped!

ALSO... Is the fuel completely gone after the last bar is not shaded in....because I haven't yet allowed the car to do that...
it would be SO much easier if they just had a normal indicator...

My guage is the same way, i guess its normal, it seems the dot will not drop till that dot is emptied, you probably have the 6 gal tank, so it will go faster than the 8 gal, i have the 8 gal on my 2002 and it will go 400 miles before the last dot is gone, i never ran out , yet, you must be a new owner of an 02 smart!

lol thanks. its a 0.7 petrol I BELIEVE... and it has 6 little boxes for the gauge.... and it's very annoying...
other than that and the delayed gear changing, I love the car :D

Bumbleflea will do a similar thing, the first bar, I can drive and get 60-70 miles on that so you would assume thats how it is 60-70 miles per bar, but my second bar typically disappears at 80-100 miles

My favorite is when you leave the gas station and the bar disappears like 3 miles later. Dang early shutoff!
I actually prefer when you leave the gas station with 7/8 bars, drive 50 miles, then start the car again afterwards and find you have a full 8 bars. :D

I think that only happens once the dealer has "fixed" the gauge with a reflash, though.

I'm afraid not. I've had mine since October 2008, and it never exhibited that behavior til yesterday. I filled it, and it showed 7/8 til today. Took about 15 miles and overnight before it showed full. We'll see what happens at next fill-up.....

This is my look on it. There's 8 bars I think they represent 1 gallon of gas each but the tank holds 8.8 so the first bar in my car drops at about 85 miles and then they start dpopping every 35 or 40 miles and when the last one is gone it starts flashing 1.0-.09-.08 and so on. I have personaly had mine flash .00 many times before I stop for gas, so I'm thinking I had less than a tenth of a gallon of gas in the tank. I think the gas gauge is dead on. Thats my .02 cents:smartje.zw.zw:

Just filled mine up for the second time. Slow auto fill to click off and then I pulled the filler out of the neck, waited a few seconds and then reinserted it and tried using slow fill again. Almost immediate click-off. So I just squeezed in enough to round off the price. Get in and 7/8 on the gauge. Drive less than 20 miles and shut off. A short while later hop in and now gauge shows 8/8...
This has happened on both fillups. A "normal" quirk for the car?

New Smart Cabriolet -Gas Gage problem

Hello,

I am a new member and had my Cab for a little over three weeks. I am on my third tank of gas and noticed that after I filled up this time....same station and same pump (8.25 g) the first bar is not filled in. I have read that some other folks have noticed some strange behavior. Is this something I can expect? I love the car....!

Thanks,
John
