Where did you purchase your Smart from? I too have been looking to purchase one here in the LA area and am just starting to look in to service stations for it. I have a few leads so far and am talking to some others who are owners in the area too.

service/repair in Los Angeles

SMART, a private party, but, I know it is a G & K conversion. I would be very interested in sharing information w/ other local L.A. owners re parts, tires, and service. Right now arranged just light maintenance support from absolutely GREAT mechanic I've known many years [Jim Matson Automotive on Pico], but want to be prepared just in case anything major, beyond what he can help me with, comes up in the future.

Service is obviously an issue for current Smart owners and may continue to be when the new models come out. Sadly for me in the Chicago area the only "authorized" service dealer is also a Lamborgini dealer so my oil change and other miscellaneous work came to over $200. I called every Mercedes dealer in the area and none of them would work on the car. I bought the car in Pittsburgh so taking it back to the dealer would be a problem.

LA service

Just for future reference if in LA, found excellent place to repair/maintain smart car. Had computer to diagnose and reset. Did "A" Service. Had to plan ahead for parts but no problem. Owner very enthusiastic and did a lot of research on Smarts. Second Smart he has worked on [in LA that's say'n something]. Independent Mercedes Benz garage:

My Smart's been rear-ended twice in the 8 months I've had it. --
First time I was repaired at Beverly Coachcraft on Sawtelle and the second time at Classic Collision Center in Silverlake. Both shops did a great job although it took about a month to get it back each time.
Communication was much better at Classic Collision Center and Beverly Coachcraft wouldn't refund my decuctible for almost 6 months, so I'll likely be avoiding them in the future...

I've had two close calls where I was almost rear ended. Both times, I saw the SUV's coming in my rear view mirrow while I was stopped at the light and only managed to escape because I hit the accelerator and moved forward before they got to me. Both times, the SUV's stopped in the space I previously occupied! PHEW!!

I'm wondering if there's an optical illusion type cause for this? Like, possibly, because of our size, we appear to someone trying to beat the light, that we're much further down the road than we actually are?

DO NOT go to Mercedes Beverly Hills

I dropped off my car at Smart (Mercedes) Beverly Hills on Saturday, July 21. I had a 10am appointment and I was precisely on time, but they made me wait for 20 minutes while they fawned over Mercedes owners and basically treated me like a third class citizen. At one point, one of the service associates was laughing with a Mercedes owner about my car, while I stood there looking like an idiot being ignored.

The service associate, Carlos, estimated $126 for check engine light test, $126 to fix my non working horn and $120 for an oil change. $120 for an OIL CHANGE? Also an additional $126 to see why my "Check Engine" light was on.

Then Carlos, said he would call me by 1:00 to let me know when I could pick up my car. I called at 2:00 (voicemail) and again at 2:30, 4:15 and finally spoke to Carlos at 4:50 who informed me the service department closed at 5:00 and I wouldn't be able to get my car until the following Monday.

So now it's Monday, 07/23/12 11:18am: I have called three times and emailed. NO response whatsoever from the service dept. I have called to tell them to NOT perform the oil change or fuel system check and to JUST fix the horn because the other work I can have done elsewhere with better customer service and less money.

On a side-note, I was charged $2.10 for the privilege of turning around in the parking structure on Saturday because the signage for the service department entrance was not visible from the main driving entrance to the facility.

This is completely unacceptable. If I am being charged for Mercedes-level service, I expect to receive Mercedes-level service.

Hey SmartUSA - What the EFF???

Julie,

I've been a client of Mercedes Benz/ smart Beverly Hills since July 2008 and I've ALWAYS been treated with respect, courtesy and fairness, nor do I feel there's been any price gouging either. My guess is as it was a Saturday, there was a 'substitute' smart service associate. I suggest you call Tom Wire, the dealer Service Manager there and speak to him. There was a disconnect going on which is not what I've ever experienced there in my 4 years of going there.

Okay... this issue has apparently been escalated to MBUSA -- they keep calling me... got an email today from them that said this: "
Dear Ms. O’Mailey: (spelled wrong)

We've been working with Mercedes-Benz of Beverly Hills in response to your Twitter comments.

Carol Quintero, Service Manager, at this store, tells us that your smart is fixed and that you are happy. We are happy to review the repairs and charges with you. Ms. Quintero is happy to do the same.

Our goal is to make sure we're clearly communicating and that you're satisfied with the outcome.

Sincerely,
Ion C.
Case Manager
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC"

So I sent THIS:

My Smart is running normally, the horn works and the “Check Engine” light is off, but I am far from happy. I feel as if I have paid a premium price for sub-standard service.

In the last three days I've gotten no fewer than seven calls from various levels of managers in the service department at Mercedes-Benz of Beverly Hills, which I find ironic… of course they're being attentive now that they have a third of my paycheck and I've posted a snit on Twitter and Facebook for 100,000 eyeballs to see. Where was that attention when I was sitting in their service bay, twiddling my thumbs for 20 minutes while they doted on the S-Class owner that got there after I did? Where was that attention when I questioned the validity of a $120 oil change for 3-1/2 quarts of oil and 15 minutes of labor?

I spent $333.05 on what ended up being an oil change, a software upgrade (which is listed as “free” on the receipt, but we both know that charge was simply added to the labor charges elsewhere), and a car wash. Plus two full working days of silence and no transportation while I called and called to find out what was happening with my car. The paperwork states “Customer has $25.00 off Saturday Coupon”, but I don’t see that discount anywhere on the actual receipt.

I was charged $250 in labor for “test Check Engine warning light” – which included a “short test”, cleaning carbon buildup from the throttle and resetting the fault memory. No parts were needed, and the service agent informed me that if the Check Engine light comes on again, they would have to rebuild the cylinder heads to the tune of $700+. I know I’m a girl and all, but I’m not completely stupid about internal combustion engines, and I do know that a car with less than 40,000 miles doesn’t need the cylinders rebuilt.

What really chapped my hide, though, was that I took my car in promptly at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 21st, but was not greeted, not acknowledged, and just stood there for twenty minutes while the valets and the service people met and dealt with several Mercedes drivers, two of which arrived after I did. At one point one of the other customers made a disparaging remark about my car, and the service person with them laughed, but they all continued to ignore me. I got the impression from all of the service employees that they were unhappy about having to service Smart Cars and that the whole vehicle line is considered to be a pain in their butt and the bastard redhead stepchild of the Mercedes Company. I was NOT given the same level of service as the other customers, especially anyone driving an E-Class or above.

On a side-note, I was charged $2.10 for the privilege of turning around in the parking structure on Saturday because the signage for the service department entrance was not visible from the main driving entrance to the facility.

The service person who was assigned to my car told me before I left that he would call me at 1:00 pm to let me know what the status was and how long the service would take. Considering the simplicity of my needs, I was under the impression that I would be able to pick up my car that same day. By 1:45, I was a little concerned that I had not received a call, so I called the service department and received his voicemail, whereas I left a message. I called again at 2:30, 4:15 and finally spoke to him at 4:50, when he informed me that the service department closed at 5:00 so I would not be able to get my car until the following Monday. He had no answers to my questions regarding what was wrong with my car or why it was taking so long, which told me in no uncertain terms that they hadn’t even looked at it yet.

On Monday, July 23rd I called at 9:00am, 9:30am and 10:30am. By 11:58am, I had received NO response whatsoever from the service dept. I called again at noon to tell them to NOT perform the oil change or fuel system check and to JUST fix the horn because the other work I can have done elsewhere with better customer service and less money. Finally, after 1:00 pm, I received a phone call where I was informed that none of my messages were received and that the oil change had been performed, and they were looking into dismantling the cylinders, I immediately told them to stop because I would not pay for one more minute of service or parts and to put everything back together so I could pick up my car. He then informed me that the charges up to that point were $333.05, but they “really needed to rebuild the cylinders and replace the angle regulator on the horn”, both of which would be over $700 – each.

To summarize, Mercedes-Benz of Beverly Hills charged me $333.05 to jiggle a wire in my steering wheel, do an oil change, look at the "Check Engine" light in my Smart Car and wash it. It took twelve phone calls, three emails, a call to Smart USA and a couple of Tweets to get the service dept at the dealership to call me back.

This is completely unacceptable. If I am being charged for Mercedes-level service, I expect to receive Mercedes-level service.

Anybody know where I can fix my smart other than dealer? in L.A. CA - SoCal Smarties (Los Angeles, CA) - Meetup

Does anyone know approximately how much a 60K service on a 2008 Smart Car Passion Cabrio would cost?
