With dealerships closing at a record pace, even the newest brand is not receiving immunity. The smart center White Plains has closed its doors for good. We are happy to announce that smartcentersmithtown has many smarts available in every model. Please call them if you are interested in purchasing a smart. Vinny, Mike and Peter will be here to answer any questions at 631-361-4500

This leaves northern Westchester County, a suburban county located in New York, without a smart center and more than their share of upset smart owners.

This is disheartening news for smart USA, but more so for those who purchased cars and planned to get them serviced, at the White Plains smart center.

None the less "smart center Smithtown is a new and preowned smart car dealership serving Long Island, New York and the tri-state area. Everyone who purchased or was to take delivery of their smart vehicle from the White Plains center was supposed to get a letter that the Ray Catena White Plains store was closing.

Nevertheless, if the numerous questions and grievances we've received is any indication, many were not notified and left in the dark. Perhaps a phone call would have been better?

The smart center White Plains website has been down and password protected for over a month making it difficult for customers to get the real story. We did speak with a smart specialist who said that Ray Catena closed its entire dealer group in the area.

However, on the Ray Catena Motors main website they still have a smart brand logo that takes you to their smart center in Edison, NJ. Sadly, for some the smart center Edison is 58 miles away from smart center White Plains.

For those of you who have asked the nearest smart center from the closed down White Plains store is the smart center Manhattan about 25 miles, followed by smart center Fairfield in CT some 37 miles away and then smart center Smithtown and smart center Roslyn a 60 mile trip.

When the Penske/smart USA franchise process got under way they had thousands of applicants, times were better than good and everyone was making money, and buying up everything in site. We guess Mr. Catena figured the smart was so small he'd take two.
The hand-picked dealers paid $350,000, for the privilege of selling the smart fortwo, fixtures and graphics were an additional $85,000 and the dealer's cost doesn't include the dirt or the brand new smart centers many dealers built. Smart franchises margins on the car are reported to be 7% with an additional 2% for each car retailed and delivered in the smart center's area? So it's apparent none of the dealers made any money in 2008 from the sales of the smart car.

Ray Catena Motors is one of the largest dealers in the Northeast selling Aston Martin, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Lexus, Porsche, Infiniti, Jaguar and the Mini and like most smart dealer franchises depended on their other car brands to financially support the Penske/smart USA franchise and it appears this latest closing is a sign of the times.

But as one Ray Catena smart center goes under their smart center of Edison started leasing 2009 Passion Coupe's for $195.00 and 2009 Passion Cabriolet's for $269.00 per month.

Here's a thought. As smart owners it would be nice if we were allowed to have a service manual so that we could take the car elsewhere for repairs. A service manual for the smart has never been offered or released publicly and for some reason smart GmbH refuses to release there official edition of the smart service and repair manual and say it is illegal for us to possess one. Not smart!
