Thanks for all of the support! I know all of you have unanswered questions and I plan to address each one of them in time.

I would like to let reservation holders know that you will be contacted by smart 1 (reservation management) after the store is completed. After that initial contact, one of our specialists from the store will be contacting you to set an appointment for a test drive and introduction to the staff in order of reservation date. Because of the volume of reservation holders, this process may take up to 2 months (so please be patient). If you have already driven at a road show, we ask that you allow us to test drive all of the reservation holders that have not driven the car yet so they feel as confident with their decision to purchase a smart car as the rest of us. You are however always welcome to drop by the center to visit with the understanding that you will only be allowed to drive the car if you have made an appointment.

The most important message I have for you is that I am as excited to get cars as you are and know it is hard to be patient. However, the process that has been established for confirmation and delivery is design for maximum customer service for all reservation holders. If at any time you feel like you are not getting answers you need, do not hesitate to contact me directly. Because of the large number of inquiries we get, please use email to ensure a prompt reply. Contact us using [email protected].

Hi Ethan,

I'm not from Seattle but want to thank you for communicating how things will work and putting your contact info out there. Hopefully our central Ohio dealer will do the same in the near future.

John
Hi Ethan,

Do you have an update on when you will receive Seattle's reservations? After you have these, will you guys be calling your reservations? How far does your territory extend? Canadian line, all the way to eastern Washington, etc?
Greetings
I'm from western Montana and have been told that I will pick my smart up in Seattle. There are no dealers in Montana or any states surrounding Montana.

Wouldn't most Seattle-area reservation holders only have had a chance to test drive one of the European spec cars that were here on the road show, not a US spec car? I was told that the US spec car shifts gears better than those cars. The gear change was the one thing that I didn't like about the car. Wouldn't most people who haven't blindly decided to get the car want to see what a US spec car shifts like?

Are the test drives going to be more than just around the block? That may be good enough to get a driver's license in middle Georgia (guess where I got my first driver license?), but it doesn't really tell you what the car is like to drive.

With all that has been going on it has been tough for me to keep up with all of the threads I have working. I should pay attention to my own at least I guess. We received our reservations for vehicles scheduled to arrive in the next 30 days. Thursday night I sent emails to all the reservation holders I have contact information for. If you feel you should have been on that list, call smart 1 (800.762.7887) first to confirm you are "in transit" or better, then give me a call here at the store (206.243.1455). Any of our staff members can assist you so you don't need to get to me directly. Our voicemail system has crashed so if you are not able to get a person on the line send an email to [email protected] and I will do my best to get you the information you need. PLEASE do not call until you have confirmed with smart 1 that we should have contacted you.

Our area of responsibility is the entire State of WA.

Out of staters

It is my understanding that many dealers are not ready to receive cars for a variety of reasons. This will not keep you from getting your smart, as long as you are able to make arrangements with the dealer your car has been diverted to. As for Montana and surrounding areas, Seattle is going to be the assigned delivering dealer for most. We are very flexible on delivery and transportation so let us know your needs and we will do our best to accommodate.

Mail addressed to you (Ethan) at your contact address on the Web site is returned.
The finance and info section does not accept Local Zip codes nor the state of Washington as being acceptable information....
Ethan,

Can you tell us where your dealership stands on the extra fees (doc fee, prep fee, etc) issue that's received much attention elsewhere in these forums recently?

Thanks
other fees

The only "dealer fee" that is not a Manufacturer or shipping fee is the doc fee which is the same for every transaction. At this time there are no additional prep or inspection fees. The "destination charge" is an actual shipping charge that all new vehicle manufacturers charge in addition to the MSRP. smart is charging the same $ amount regardless of location to be fair to all consumers and dealers.

Ethan
Thanks. How much is the doc fee, and what exactly does it cover?
WA document fees

Seems WA state is fixed at $100, unless it has gone up again.

It is good news compared to other states doc. fees.
CA caps dealers at $55 now, its a fee paid to the dealer that the dealer pockets. FL doesn't cap fees and they go upwards of $499. All profit.

Check the "out the door" thread for a full discussion.
I'll post this over in the mid-west section as well ...

As I bought two new cars (one last year, the other the year before) the pre-printed "doc" fee was $53 and then $58 in IL; now it appears the dealer lobby has convinced the legislature to raise it to $150 (see link, it was effective 1/1/08) so to those first few folks getting their smart's at Lake Bluff or Lincolnwood soon don't be surprised! The other 'fees' they typically hit you up for are strictly title application, plates (new or transfer) but most can give you a new plate (if needed) right away versus a temp paper one --- ahh progress, always comes at a price ...
