Smart Fortwo Cabriolet Top Care

Most automatic car washes are safe for a Smart Fortwo cabriolet top. But using a car wash with barrel brushes should be avoided. All Smart Fortwo cabriolet owners should use a fluorocarbon repelling system to protect their tops. There are kits developed exclusively for the cleaning and care of a cabriolet roof. Smart Cabriolet Top Care...Your Smart cabriolet top is basically just a piece of cloth that, when driving, gets everything our environment can throw at it. Smart manufacturers are aware of this and use high-grade and heavy-gauge materials for cabriolets.

But there still are things we can do to provide added protection to the material for longer-lasting protection to the Smart cabriolet top, which needs safeguards just like the car panel's paint, cloth, leather seats and even the carpeting.

For starters, most automatic car washes are safe for convertible tops, but those using barrel brushes should be avoided. Hand-washing will ensure the least amount of cumulative wear-and-tear on your cabriolet top.

Clean your top with mild dishwashing soap. Never use a cotton wash mitt on your convertible top. If you do, you'll see why!

For hard to remove spots, stains and to seal your top here are two products we recommend!

One product is terrific for cleaning your smarts cabriolet top as well as the carpet and upholstery. This is not a shampoo but a professional extractor that goes at the source of the cabriolet top's stain, braking it down and eliminating most spots and stains from your cabriolet top.

It’s called Smart Cleaner and sells in many high end car dealerships such as Porsche, Mercedes and Lexus.

The other product is a fabric-Guard protectant. Once your cabriolet top is cleaned and thoroughly dried apply Fabric-Guard Protectant sealant. We recommend you apply it evenly over any exposed fabric surface of the cabriolet tops in three light coats, allowing the product to dry 10 minutes or so between coats.

These two products are specifically for cleaning the Smart cabriolet roof and re-proofing that, when used correctly thet protect and preserve your cabriolet top, extending its life and helping stop dirt from penetrating the cloth to keep it looking clean and fresh. No matter what you use, make sure it does not contain any silicone, Freon, or CFCs.

We recommend all new Smart Fortwo cabriolet owners use a chemical with a fluorocarbon-repelling system. Products with these chemicals bond with the top’s fabric and repel liquid and dirt while, at the same time, providing ultraviolet protection.

You can use Scotch-guard on your Fortwo’s cabriolet top. It will make hosing off dirt and grime much easier. You should also try it on your Smart's cloth seats; it will do wonders and help in the long run with the car’s trade-in value.

If you've ever had that nasty and sticky tree sap on your convertible top, you know it's challenging to remove and can ruin your cabriolet.

Here's a useful tip that will help. Just use a little WD40, vegetable oil or PAM cooking spray to remove it. But, try it first on an unobtrusive area for color-fastness.

Hopefully, you'll never get green mold on your top. But if you do, there is only one thing I have found to remove it permanently and that is sodium hypochlorite. But it can also damage natural fabric.

It is very potent, and if the fabric cover is white or nylon (and stitched with nylon), no problem. If it is black, don't even think of using it. Again, use it first in an unobtrusive area to be certain of its effect.

Headliner Stains

:smartje.grs.zw:I have a 2009 Passion Cabriolet ForTwo, and want to remove the headliner to clean it. Does anyone have instructions for removal? I did find a post by Mike about removal on an earlier model but it is not made like the 2009.
I see I'm not alone.

Yes. The inner surface gets dirty. I've tried to keep the roll bar clean. Didn't seem to help.

I had the liner steam cleaned by a detailer once. It turned out great. I quit smoking before I had it cleaned but it has returned. It's not the color you'd expect from cigarette smoke anyway. It's grey/black.

I wish I could figure out the source of the soiling to try to prevent it. It's not an evenly distributed soiling, it's patchy.

Any ideas out there?

Post #1 good info for the exterior.
I have to figure out how to remove cat hair from the neighborhood cat that sleeps on my top. (From the top, not the cat).

Went to a local car-wash once. 15 bucks for a plain wash. No discount for diminutiveness and I couldn't leave because there was a tight line of cars behind me.

Have you tried a lint roller?
I just got 303 brand cleaner and 303 fabric guard for our cabriolet. Napa has it in their catalog or if you have a Napa warehouse near, you can pick it there. on the 303 wed site you will find other dealers that handle their probucts. Here is a link to it, Home page

Nope, I would not attempt to remove the headliner.
Two cleaners I would try would be 1. Capture with the premist and moist powder, which vacuums out after drying. I've used it on silk ties and even suede leather with good success. It will even take black axle grease out of a white carpet. It is a Millikin product made for carpet care. It was originally spilled on a carpet in a lab and left a clean spot, which is how they discovered it for its use as a carpet cleaner. 2. would be Folex. It is a spray on undiluted form or it can be diluted for use in a spot spray cleaner with vacuum or a carpet cleaning machine. A spray and vacuum rug cleaner with a hand tool for cleaning stairs might be perfect for the cabrio headliner.
The Folex may make the dirt disappear by simply spraying it on directly. You could also blot with a clean dry fluffy towel after spraying with Folex. Folex has been around about forty years. If we run out of the gallon size at Home Depot, loyal customers get angry. It is that good. I have not needed to use it on my Headliner yet, but I will eventually try it especially on the front inside corners on each side of the windshield.

I poured maple syrup on the cat and dragged her across the top, but that made it worse. After the cat finishes licking the syrup off the top (and herself), I'll try a lint roller.

After my dear, departed "Harvey," Abby is about the coolest cat I've met. I have the shelf in the luggage area of my cabrio, and one day I'm working on the car and didn't even notice she was around. I walked around to the back of the car, and there she is, on top of the shelf, looking out the back window. She always crawls in the car if I leave a door open.

She was sleeping on the top one day and refused to get off. I started opening the top, and she just kept moving toward the rear until she was on the plastic rear edge of the cabrio top. She finally jumped off after I drove about 10 feet down the driveway.

We just moved to a different house last week and I miss her loitering around already. I wonder how much jail time I'd have to do if caught and charged with catnapping. On second thought, Abby's owner, 3 houses down, has 2 young kids, so I couldn't steal her.:(

I must admit... I've never seen the headliner of a cabrio... never been inside one! BUT... I've used this with great success on the headliners of other cars:

Interior Cleaner - Interior Detailing - Car Care - Griot's Garage

(FYI... Every Griot's product I've ever used has exceeded my expectations. It's not cheap, but as I'm fond of saying here: you get what you pay for.)

I use Griot's products too and they are great! The heavy duty wheel cleaner eats up break dust in a flash and smells good too.

On a real rain day my wife and I took a ride to their shop in Tacoma WA. They have a hugh garage with several doors and they took our car in. We were in a Arrest Me Red 1988 Corvette. They used their waterless cleaner on 1/2 of the hood and wiped it off with their micro towel made for this project.

Once done they used Machine Polish #3 on the hood and I could not believe how all of the swirls were removed. I was sold! I don't use the waterless cleaner (I did buy it) because I'm able to use water but I do use most of their other products. I clay bared the Vette then used their buffer (more or less a Surhold brand) with the #3 polish and then used their paste wax and I have not had to do anything execpt wash the car with their wash with wax and the car looks like it came out off the show room.

I have not used their products on our 2009 smart. What I did use was RejeX. I applied it once after the car was 3 months old. I have not done anything execpt wash the car with Griots wash/wax and the car looks like it's still new. I'm going to apply a new coat this spring. As their ad states "Nothing sticks but the shine". It's true! :smartje.bl.zw:
