It may not be the fastest or flashiest car on the market, but for the second year in a row the Smart Fortwo was the most coveted car by French thieves. Curiously, the car thieves weren't so interested in the car, but rather what's in it.

German-made
smart car, the Smart Fortwo, was the most stolen car in France for two years running, a new ranking has shown.

Published by the magazine Auto Plus on Friday, the annual ranking is based on statistics provided by 15 insurers and banks, which represent some 20 million vehicles in France.
According to the magazine it has nothing to do with its ability to park in small spaces or ecological fuel consumption and more to do with its “very little resistance to burglary” and the fact that its parts are “worth gold”.

Interesting that "France's News in English" doesn't recognize the smart as built in France....

And apparently making off with a smart is as easy as PI.

Guess the immobilizer isn't that good at immobilizing...

Be that as it may-- our key replacements costs a fortune however, because 'they are special'.
I think that is the "key"of the issue. Parts cost. Most stolen cars are taken for parts. Citroen, Renault and Peugeot build lots of cars and there are even a pallet of micro car builders that make a living there. My guess would be parts cost.
