Smart key question

5839 Views 22 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Goggles Paesano
So I just bought a sweet new to me 2010 yellow 251(!!!!!!!iiiiii)
I have only one key with it so my question is, do I need the electronics in the key for it to run? Meaning if I have a key cut to work but it doesn't have the chip in it will the car run?
Also, can I transfer the electronics from a key from my old 251 to this one somehow?

Lastly, if no to transferring or using without chip where is my best source for a replacement key?

Thanks for any help

Will this work?

Federal rules back in the ~2000s required electronic immobilizer on all vehicles (they could have 1 vehicle line per model year per manufacturer exempt from it). Smart looks like it uses passive Philps transponder chip ID46 in the key head. No power is needed to the chip as it is passive. It is programmed like a door access RFID chip and the chip code is saved guessing in the SAM (but need to confirm). The coil around the ignition key cylinder is powered and produces an electromagnetic interrogation pulse that triggers the transponder chip to send data to it. If the authentication replies match what is saved in the SAM(???) then the vehicle will start. So you can program a new coded chip to the car or you can clone an existing chip.

I'm looking at getting a key cutting machine and a cloning machine, maybe.
I unfortunately have an ex Car2Go, which only came with 1 key from Germany. I got the car with 3 remotes and 4 cut keys. All the cut keys will turn the ignition on. Only 2 of the three remotes with key will start the car, and only 1 remote with key will loc/un-lock and start the car. I guess in my case I will need to clone the good working remote that will lock and unlock along with starting the car.

Now I just need a person who can clone my remote.

I guess another option if for an auto start alarm which uses one of the starting keys in a box permanently to bypass the factory requirement and then I can get several other remotes.

Anyone know anybody who does cloning.???

No the chip to be able to start the car can be cloned, NOT the remote to unlock/lock the car. You have 2 keys with working chips that can start the car and that is good. That is the tough part as on most cars you need special tools to program it.
Programming a new remote can be easy or might require programming to an ECU in the car by the STAR system. Haven't dealt with MB so I am not sure. But on some cars you can buy a remote (can be a factory or third party manufacturer) and you do a bunch of sequences to program it to the car i.e. lock unlock door 10 times, open and close the door, then lock unlock door again some more number of times, push 2 buttons on the remote etc or short a pin on the ECU to enter programming mode and push the remote buttons to program it.
In Canada, Canadian tire in some stores has a chip cloning machine (not what you need). The US, Autozone has a display that allows you to test the remote if it is sending a signal when you push the lock, unlock, truck, etc button on the remote. Maybe Canadian tire has the same. That way you can check to see if the remote is working. You might just to sync it back to the car.

Might work since the Smart auto locks itself and you just can tee into the buttons on the dash but you would need to test it.
