Denny and Karl, Unless things have changed, the way I understood it at the time, was GM bought Daewoo but were not going to import them into the U.S. but all were going to China. Im not aware that the Cruz etc are Daewoos in disguise, Maybe things have changed in the past 10 yrs and I'm just not aware that Chevy vehicles (some) are manufactured in the old Daewoo plant in Korea.
Maybe you guys can bring me up to date..
Thanks for your input..
Don
They bought the company. Not just a factory, they still have folks that design vehicles Chevrolet Spark - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia hope this helps.

The Chevy Cruise,
is built in Lordstown, Ohio and design by Opel. The Sonic is built in Lake Orion Mi. and may have been design by DaeWoo but shares the Cruses powertrain, which I believe, is built in Flint Mi. The Spark is built by Daewoo in Korea.

Back to Smart and numbers: 100,792 sold worldwide last year:

More than 100,000 smart fortwo cars delivered to customers
The two-seat smart fortwo remains a young brand that is in demand even at the end of its life-cycle: With sales of 100,792 units in 2013 the smart car remained nearly at the level of the previous year (previous year: 103,722 units). The smart fortwo electric drive sold very well. The all-electric urban car was the market leader in Germany in 2013. The electric car also proves its mettle in operation at car2go: It accounts for about ten per cent of the car2go fleet numbering some 10,000 vehicles worldwide, and transports thousands of people every day. The market launch of the successors to the smart will be in the fourth quarter of the year.

Time to bring this thread back to life: 89,844 (-10.9%) smarts sold worldwide in 2014.

New smart models popular among our customers
In the year of the model change, 89,844 smart units were sold (PY 100,792). In 2014, smart was particularly successful in the USA, where the previous year's sales could be topped by 12.8%. The new smart fortwo and the four-seater smart forfour are available at the dealers since the end of November. Unit sales jumped by 17.5% in the first month after the launch. For 2015, the brand expects a significant increase in the sales numbers worldwide through the availability of the new models.
The carsharing provider car2go counts one million customers worldwide at the turn of the year. After the 2014 start of car2go in the cities of Rome, Florence, Frankfurt, Copenhagen and Stockholm, as well as in South Bay L.A. and Brooklyn N.Y.C., use of smart carsharing services is now possible in 30 European and North American cities.

Virtually all of those 2014 cars were made in Hambach and I guess that represents about 57% of total production capacity; perhaps 75% on the basis of two shifts - not very good overall from the perspective of fixed cost assets but somewhat OK from the perspective of the two shifts they have going.

In 2015 it will be two factories supplying global smart sales so getting data on the production capacity efficiencies of Hambach will be more difficult.
