Penske-smart, West Covina hosted a 10 year anniversary party in the Fall of 2008. It was a well attended affair that included a tour along with a police escort to keep all the smart cars together. Sadly, in light of smart pulling the ICE from the US market, I doubt that you will see any type of celebration here in the US. All of the sponsors are gone and most of the enthusiasm for the brand has waned as well. All we can hope for is that the ED smart 453 will attract buyers and that the mothership will still continue to support the brand by providing parts and service.

I know it's all about the money and corporate world does nothing without their eye on the bottom line. While I know and understand the postion, one does need to make money to survive. I always wonder why smart didn't do better in the US. It seems a no brainer, great little car with great milage, easy on the eyes and a blast to drive. I do see the other car makers are having success with micro mini entries, but smart never made it really big. Makes me sad to know that such a great idea fell on little success. Maybe I'm a little jaded by my love for the brand.

It would have probably taken a huge marketing effort by the Mother ship to try & promote the brand that they figured would have negative results. Look how long the Scion IQ lasted. The majority of motorists in the US just don't seem to understand the car. Promoting the car as city vehicle, I think, was a mistake as well for the US.
