i JUST purchased a 2009 Blue Passion and there is a round disc shaped device on the inside of the windshield that looks OEM, but i have no clue what it might have been or if it is still used by something. i don't see any GPS or Sirius device (could have been removed) and the radio on all the Smarts i have seem to be 'junk', so i don't have a clue.... best guess would be for a Sirius or GPS device, but it looks so OEM, it even has the shading/crosshatching that is OEM behind the rear view mirror, and it appears to have some kind of photo/light sensor on the glass side...

It's a rain sensor for the automatic wipers. Put the wipers down one click and whenever the sensor gets too "covered" it will activate the wipers. I almost never use the manual wiper settings over the automatic setting unless it's raining heavily.

thank you all, i never have known what options were available on the Smarts and i have never seen anything like this before (and i don't know if it works). my dead 08 has a security alarm system (apparently as an OEM option) and my other 09 seems to have nothing special (except for the gauges i swapped from the dead 08 :) )

My first 08 smart cab. Had the windshield "puck" it also controlled the headlights.
It was offered as the Comfort Package for ($850) it came with power steering, heated leather seats, automatic headlights, and a rain and light sensor.

this 09 'seems' to have power steering (at least it is lighter steering than my other 09) but i haven't looked to see if it has a pump or reservoir anywhere. didn't know about the lights either...

thanks

The power steering is with an electric motor - no pump or reservoir. Turn a key on, don’t start, if you see a “steering wheel” symbol on the right of you dashboard, you have a power steering.
The automatic lights - auto position on the left stalk.

THANK YOU ALL...., comparing it with my other 09, i wouldn't have ever known..... i just went out and looked and i do seem to have all those bells and whistles from the comfort package: seat heaters buttons (and it works..), the steering wheel emblem, the auto setting on the light switch, and i presume the auto wipers as the switch doesn't turn on the wipers on a dry windshield......

now if i can find a fob or fob type key that will work the locks...

I have an '09 and was always under the impression it was an antitheft device I got as an extra Can't remember the company name as it expired years ago. All cars have rain sensors and they're not big round blobs stuck to the windshield.

Thanks, I have a 2008 with the same package. Lately, I was wondering where the control for the lights was. I was hoping to cover the sensor so I could keep them on even in bright daylight to use as running lights. I am going to cover the sensor in the center to see if that will accomplish what I want.

it seems to be part of the comfort package Jo e Lefors mentioned: the wipers definitely are activated by rain, the seats are leather and heated, the headlights come on automatically, and it has power steering...

my 2008 has the antitheft option and the gauges; nothing else. it's a simple door opening system.

as to the lights, i would guess all you have to do is turn it off auto in order to have full time lights

the 'comfort package' can be comforting. i have two 2009 smarts, one with the package and one without; it almost seems to be a hassle to have to turn on the headlights or the wipers on the car without the package after driving the car with, and the heated seats and the power steering and automatic headlights and auto wipers are really nice to have and at times can spoil you...

i never knew there was such a thing and was just lucky to have gotten it in the used car.

another great thing is cruise control, my non-package car has aftermarket cruise control.... :)
