Sorry, Jeff. If a key needs to be programmed, all keys must be available for relearning. The smart can “remember” up to 6 keys, but all need to be present at the time to program the SAM.

A good locksmith can cut the keys and program them. I’ve bought 315mHz keys on-line, had them cut and programmed for about $50 each. Now I have a MB Star diagnostic machine so I can program them myself.

To deal with an “all keys lost” situation, a Star diagnostic machine is a must.

In my experience, taking a Smart to the dealer for keys will result in a request to verify ownership in multiple ways (title, proof of residence, utility bills, etc), then the keys will be sent from Germany. Not terribly efficient, but very security minded. Been there, done that (refused the $495+ estimate).

I wouldn’t send my SAM to anyone. If it gets lost in the mail, my car is dead.

If anyone would like free key programming, I’ll do it for them if they are close enough to make it feasible. I’m in the Rochester, NY area. You would still need to have the key cut (I know a reliable place that will do it for $25) and have have all your other keys at the time of programming, but I’ll do it free to help my fellow smart enthusiasts.
