Hi, I've halfway settled in getting a fortwo before Christmas but I'm having trouble finding one with the options I want in my nearest dealers' websites. I was wondering if you can special order one.

I know dealers don’t like to do this and there would something of a waiting period, but does anybody know if it’s even possible? Or could the dealer find a matching car from another dealership?

It's absolutely possible. You can either configure one on the smart USA website (smart USA - open your mind to the car that challenges the status quo) and take that to a smart center, or simply visit the center and configure one there, discuss the options, financing, extended warranty, etc. There will be a wait time but you'll have it before Christmas. There's also a good chance the dealer can find what you want from another smart center. :)

Ignore all of the above - missed the fact you're down under. Not sure how things work with your dealers there.

I would suggest you talk to your local dealer, they may have some insight as to what options are available to you. In the US, the dealers can contact other dealers and locate cars with the options you want.

Jonathan, I did exactly that, and took delivery after two months.
I went to my local smart center and said I wanted to order certain options; the brand specialist (sales person) said they'd never done that, that all of their customers usually just chose among the available stock. She was very willing to listen to me and ask about specific options and said that as soon as the 'window' for ordering was available, they would put in my order.
My visit was on January 11, the car was manufactured in February, and I took delivery on March 17.
I won't list the items here, but drop your hat and I'll create a list...

Note also that Jonathan posted this in late August last year; he's authored quite a few posts on smartcar of America.

"Hi, I'm going to be in the market for a car in late 2010/early 2011 when I move back to the US. I've pretty much decided on a smart, especially since the 2011 model is adding cruise control and after finding the Fiat 500 has inferior legroom. I just want to know if there's any news on when the new model will be available in the US."

I would suggest doing a "build/price your smart" at smartusa.com
Once you finalize what are your "MUST haves" (vs. "would be nice") print out your build sheet and visit your local dealer.
Your local dealer can (and should) check their available stock, other dealers, what's at port, what's on the boat on the way over, and if all esle fails (very unusual) you can custom order from Hambach and it will arrive within 3 months.
