I've never heard why MB did a staggered wheelbase and then make the newer additions of the Smart without the same. If there were advantages then why didn't they keep it on the newer cars since they are basically the same.

If you?re referring to the difference between the 451 and the 453, they are completely different cars. I would suggest that they made the wheelbase the way they did partly to accommodate the sharp turning radius in the 453?

Actually it's the track (distance between wheels on the same axle) that's staggered 50.5" front vs 54.5" rear on the 451, not the wheelbase (distance between the front and rear axles).
