Hi everybody!
I own a 450 0.7 61bhp from 2005 that lately developed some strange noise in the engine.

There are a few things that I noticed in the last weeks:
  • Car sounds great meanwhile it's cold
  • I can only hear this sound after driving the car for a while
  • The sound it's not consistent. It keeps going and coming back every 30 secs or so

The sound it's quite similar to the lifter taps but a little bit louder. The rhythm matches with the RPM of the engine, so that could indeed be what I'm hearing. Is just that it's way too loud(perhaps lack of oil? Though the level of oil it's correct)...

I'm currently using a 5w30 oil, which might need already to be replaced and some people pointed out that perhaps it's due to the fact that I'm using a 5w30 instead of 5w40(more density while being used warm).

I made an audio recording of the sound, perhaps it's useful :)

Does anybody have a hint on what might be going on?
Thanks!

Welcome to SCoA forums
smart did not import or sell the 450 in the States. Just relative few were imported and converted to meet US standards. Most were sold in Europe and Canada.
Europe should have a HUGE Forum, beause that is where most smarts were sold of any model 450, 451 and 453.

Welcome to the forum. Have you had you valves adjusted? Check out this site for your problem. He specializes in 450 smart cars. You can inquire with him.

Not as far as I know, so it might be indeed the case.
I will check that out!

Thanks for the warm welcome as well!
