Hello!

It's been ages since I've logged in – actually years. I'm an owner of a '08 Passion which I purchased new in March 2009. And am considering purchasing another with my low mileage of 28,000 miles. I'm getting that permanent tire pressure warning light, so I'm thinking ahead as a senior wanting a trustworthy car again.

But . . . it seems our local dealer in Pittsburgh, PA is only servicing Smarts as no inventory appears on their website. Nearest new sales are hundreds of miles away.

Anyone in the know to the future of Smarts in the US, as I only see the Electric offered in the US?

Thanks!

Yeah, like MB DNA mentioned, smart has ventured down a new path and there will not be a return from it. There will be no more internal combustion smarts sold in the US and come 2020, the rest of the world can’t get them either.

Outside of calling smart center West Covina in California and seeing if they have any petrol models left to ship to you (Mister_smart_LA works magic), your only chance now is the used market. The 2016s-2017s are a whole new generation and offer many improvements over the older smarties.

Sounds like your battery’s in you TPM, are dead. They need to be replaced. Any tire store, can replace them.

You don’t need to go to a MB dealership for that. smart car dealership, and service, is becoming extinct. Find yourself a good quailfied auto service department.

It’s a shame. Christain Brothers Automotive, is so far from your location. They do excellent work.

Krootie,
Hi
Be forewarned, Discount Tire, Big O tires and Pepboys can NOT reprogram NEW TPS to the smarts Sam computer. At least not here in nevada. Best to check first. Discount sent me to 2 of their stores before calling their TPS specialist. He confirmed, Discount does not have anyway to link New TPS to the smart computer. One Pepboys Manager said I had to drive the car up to 50 miles to reset the system. That was total BS, he didn't know what he was talking about. Discount Said almost the same but shorten the miles to 5 miles, to reset, WRONG again.
A MB "Starr" or clone is needed to assign each of your new TPS to their positions on the car. Once the smarts "sam" knows the position of each new sensor, then the pressure button on the dash can be used.

Good Luck :smartje.bl.zl:

Interesting, in January Discount Tire R & R ALL sensors on our MY08 successfully - $250.

Note, the TPS are NOT plug and play as the SAM needs the old deleted and the new added but this did not require a STAR computer.

That's great news.
Last September Discount tire here had no idea what to do. Pepboys admitted right off that they weren't equipped to reset tpms on smarts.

Same here. Didn’t need the STAR computer to reset my sensors. Had all new Conti’s and sensors, replaced at Discount tire.

Then check your tire pressures like drivers did for the first one hundred years of automobiles.... you know before the government got involved in saving us all from ourselves....

This is anecdotal:

Years ago, I asked my Lexus dealer about the reason for TPMS. I can’t say whether his answer was bonafide, but I found it interesting and totally plausible.

The dealer told me that TPMSs were mandated as a “safety offset” to allow States to repurpose their road shoulders into driving lanes (thereby reducing freeway congestion at the lowest possible cost to the States by saddling us with TPMS warning devices).

Thanks! Great info from all. I did visit a "Tire" business and they said all tires were fine and thought it was the battery which they can replace at their business. Thinking this will give me more time for the decision of another Smart. How in the world did we manage without that TPMS warning? I've been on this earth 70 years and every spring, fall, and trip we would check the tire pressures.

As for the electric - I was considering as I almost always drive around our tri-state area. But have in the past driven between Pittsburgh and Allentown PA on one tank of gas.

Grateful to all!

As much as I love my Smart I am sad to say I would never recommend to anyone to buy into one nowadays. Smart is an abandoned brand in the US and the ED version will never be able to sustain itself. I am sorry please don't kill me. I would love to date an ED version but I would never want to marry one.
