My 2015 451 sometimes does this when I pull into my garage and put it in park. Seems like if I turn off the ignition while still in drive and then put it in park there is no thunk sound but if the engine is still running I get the sound. I know nothing about cars but this is concerning. The car only has 17000 miles on it. Should I be worried? Bought it used from Carmax last year. The noise does not happen every time but it worries me. Thanks for any help.

Next time you pull into your garage, with your foot on the brake and the car in drive, pull up the hand brake, then put it in park, and then take foot off brake. If no “thunk”, then it's the parking pawl, which wears down eventually and causes problems in finding reverse and drive. I find that always engaging the hand brake before putting in Park when shutting down, and also releasing the hand brake last (after going to reverse upon startup) reduces my thunks and transmission failure-to-find problems.

Is this not the same thing that would happen if you turn off the engine while still in drive and then put it in park? I hate to think the parking pawl would be in trouble at slightly under 17000 miles. However, I don't really know how it was treated by the previous owner.
