Hi all!
This is my first post in this forum :D
So I have a Smart 450 2003 petrol. I renovated the engine and now in the point of syncing the time chain sprocket.
So given that:
1- The crank pulley notch is alligned with the motor side panel notch.
2- The 1st cylinder is on DTC.
3- We are looking at the side of the engine from the crank pulley side.
Then:
Should half of the mini circle of the time chain sprocket be:
A) To the left of the time chain sprocket screw, so the arrow will point downwards and it will be invisible.
B) To the right of the time chain sprocket screw, so the arrow will point up/right and it will be visible.
While googling I saw that some people following approach A and others following B, but there should be 1 correct way only.
Here are examples
Approach A:

Approach B:

Vehicle brake Automotive tire Locking hubs Motor vehicle Alloy wheel

I followed approach B, cause I felt that it's more logical to see the arrow on the sprocket pointing in the same direction with the motor side panel notch, but the car is running rough and it smells gas from the exhaust. so I am wondering if this could be the cause.

Thanks in advance.
