What are the tire options for a 2016 smart fortwo prime with 185/60r15 on back and 165/65r15 on front. The rear tires are easy to find but the front are difficult. Can I run the same on the front, the 185/60r15, on the front.

What are the wheel widths front and rear?

The overall tire diameter should be within 0.1" front to rear to avoid issues with traction control.

That being said you can mount the rear tire (size) on the front if the rim is wide enough.

I like the 185/55/15 23" (Diameter) size btw - lots of nice tires available.

I believe the rear width is 5 1/2 and the front is 4 1/2
Not a lot of experience in the U.S. on tire size changes for the 453. Only been a couple years of them being imported and fewer than 10,000 ICE models were imported. In addition to that, the front suspension and steering geometry were improved on the 453 so ride and handling are better than the 451. Numerous folks have purchased rear rims for their 451s so they can install same size tires on front as on rear. I’d bet, like on the 451, the front rims on the 453 are too narrow to safely install rear sized tires

Have you gone online to the Tire Rack (you can search by size or car). I have bought all my replacement tires for the long list of 451 & 453 Smarts I have owned (including the 16" Sport option wheels/tires). Free shipping and best prices!

I believe you are correct, I had a 451 and changed the front rims to match the back and it did help the ride. This 453 rides much much better than the 451 and I believe I can put 175/65r15 tires on the front on the 4 1/2 inch rims

Tire Rack only has one tire brand which is the Continental for the 2016 smart Prime

If you are keeping those rims, 165/60/15 Front (22.8" Diameter, for 4-6" wide rims) -- 185/55/15 Rear (23.0" Diameter, for 5-7" wide rims is what I would suggest.

My 450s run those sizes in the winter (3PMSF rated tires) and they come stock with 15x4 Front, 15x5.5 Rear.

My 2016 Edition #1 came with the 8Y 'Sport' 16" rims; 16x6 Front 185/50/16 (23.3" Diameter), 16x6.5 Rear 205/45/16 (23.2" Diameter) for reference.

The 185/55/15 will mount on a 4" wide rim; not recommended but works fine for me.

Hmmm? Funny I got new shoes that were Kumo's for my daughter's 2015 Brabus about 6 weeks ago from them. Arrived 'next day' on her porch? BTW the Kumo's are much quieter the OEM Continentals.

I believe if I am correct there was a change in smart fortwo cars between 2015 and 2016. The 2015 is a 451 and the 2016 is 453,

Our '16 Passion came with dissimilar-sized Conti's. The ride sucked and they wore out pronto.

Went with 195/55R15 Road Huggers all around from Discount. Kept the stock wheels.

Much better handling, ride, noise level.

Did you put the 195/55r15 on the 4 1/2 inch rims which are on the front. My tire comparison chart shows the 195/55r15 to be 7.68 wide, while the stock 165/654r15 stock tires show to be 6.5 wide and the rear stock 185/60r15 show to be 7.65 wide and they are on 5 1/2 inch rims. How did the 195/55r15 look and fit on the 4 1/2 inch rims? I would like to put same size all the way around.. Only my rear tires are wore past the ware marks. Only 22,000 miles.

The standard rims for the 165/65R15 front tires are 5Jx15 ET32 and the standard rims for the 185/60R15 rear tires are 5.5Jx15 ET42.

5.5Jx15 ET42

The PCD on these rims is 4x100mm and the central bore is 60.1mm.

The earlier 451 model came with 4.5Jx15 ET23.5 front rims and 5.5Jx15 ET22 rear rims. The later 453 model never came with rims narrower than 5".

On the 453, instead of the standard 165/65R15 front tires and 185/60R15 rear tires there are a number of options open to you. One option is to fit 185/55R15 tires to the standard 5" wide front rims and 205/50R15 tires to the standard 5.5" wide rear rims.

Big453 I was under the impression that the 453 prime had 4.5 x 15 front rims. My front Continental are in good shape with only 23,000 but the rear are worn down past the wear marks. I found the Continental 185/60r15 on sale for 73.00 so I was thinking of replacing the rear and run the front a few more miles. That is the same size that came on the rear. If I have 5 x 15 on front I would consider putting the same size all around. Would that affect the anti skid or whatever it is called?

I have tried using the same size tires all round on an early Smart pre-2003. These early cars didn't have modern ESP electronics. In the dry they were fine, as the front camber would cause the car to understeer when on the limit. However, in the wet or other slippery conditions, it would be possible to lose the back end particularly in an emergency situation. The ForTwo is a short wheelbase car with a rear weight bias, so losing the back end can happen very suddenly. Modern ESP electronics should brake individual wheels to prevent this happening.

If you want to use the same size tires all round on the 453, you could use the standard rims, or four front rims, or four rear rims. 185/60R15 tires will fit the 5Jx15 front rims and the 5.5Jx15 rear rims. My preference would be to use the original rims ie. 5Jx15 ET32 front rims and 5.5Jx15 ET42 rear rims, or rims from the Renault Twingo 2014 onwards car which has 5Jx15 ET38 front rims and 5.5Jx15 ET36 rear rims. By using Renault Twingo 2014 onwards rims, you are moving each front wheel 6mm inwards and each rear wheel 6mm outwards in comparison to the standard 453 rims, due to the difference offsets. ET stands for Einpress Tiefe which is a German word and means offset. The Renault Twingo 2014 onwards rims are almost identical to the 453 rims except that they are black instead of silver and have difference offsets.

The Smart Roadster 452 used the same size tires all round, but always used front rims that were 0.5" to 1" narrow than the rear rims. For this reason, I would be inclined to use 5" front rims and 5.5" rear rims if using the same size tires all round, rather than the same width rims all round.

Big453 you about the most knowledgeable person on the tires and rims on a 453 that I have ever talked to, thanks for all that great information. I plan to print that last post and put it in my book. Great Infomation
