My build date is 11/08. I may be wrong, but I assumed the better shifting upgrade or whatever it was had been installed at the factory.
Ours did come with th 2.0 (paddles on the fly) but not the 2.03 (clutch engagement)! My clutch plate was replaced under warranty (no mention of the s/w upgrade though):D

Mine was an 09 and came with the 2.0 update already. It did not have the latest software update that apparently upon mechanicals wearing in a bit would provide enough added pressure in shifting or clutch engagement that the "not going into reverse would ever be a problem. Mine was upgraded and I did like the new shift points. I've never had a problem with it not going into reverse.

Hi all,

I have a smart fortwo 2010 model. I have a problem with the transmission. It normally happened when I am driving or parked the car to do something. The car will just go into N while on the motion and it would not select any gear. This has happened about four times now and if I managed to push it to a side and try to start the car, it will not select any gear until when I fiddled with it for about 15 minutes and it will start to select again. I also noticed that during this time, when I stopped at traffic light or about to move from park, it will keep jumping beyond the acceleration level.
Please could anyone explain to me if you aware of what is causing the problem because I always scared every single time I am planning to use that it might not select gear or enter Neutral while driving.

Thanks
Abby

Abby, I do not have quite enough information. Where do you live. Has your car been driven in wet conditions? As in a lot of rain? or thru water? Is this a U.S. model smart, such that it has a Park position? If you do not have a U.S. smart then you leave it in R when parked?
Now, without knowing the above info, there is a sensor connector just in front of the left rear bumper on the transmission, that can get water in it and it can affect transmission function. Check that connector for water and clean it out with CRC 2-26. It improves electrical properties and disperses water. Available at The Home Depot for sure, in their electrical department. Lowe's may carry it also. It will not harm plastic, or rubber.
The U.S. models have a creep function that is enabled the car to creep forward just after you take your foot off the brake. Pull up the manual hand brake one click and the creep function is disabled, but the warning beeper sounds to remind you that you are driving with the parking brake engaged. This could be your "jumping beyond the acceleration level", and is normal for U.S. smarts, only.

Located in U.K. from the IP address.

My 2008 started jumping from stops like it forgot how to use the clutch for about a day and a half. then it went away and is working fine now. Curiouser and curiouser

Jimvw57, I had remembered YOUR experience with the water in the connector on the transmission. Maybe that is her problem. Creep mode is out of the picture then, if she is in the U.K. I am glad you are still around. Best wishes with your Range Rover. I think of you when I see one.

A bit different than what I saw back then, but still worth a check over. it was mentioned in an earlier post... and sorry but my LR is a Discovery 1.. I wish it was a range rover... but its still running good enough to use as a backup for those deep snow days!! gotta love that wiring!!

Put your foot on the brake pedal , turn the key to on, and let the tranny reteach itself. Then turn key off.. Restart in normal fashion...😉
Yes that's what I was doing! Worked for 10 months, now not at all. ForTwo City Passion Coupe 2006 - apparently this make of car or this 2006 model has a transmission flaw - ?? Is anyone aware of the flaw ??

Hey All,

So my 2008 passion has 33k miles, I just bought it less than 1mnth ago.

I've been trying to find an answer by searching forums.

What happened was I had driven the car a few miles & and then parked for quick errand. Started car, put car into R, hit the gas & all I heard was revving, looked down, and noticed there was no R in display, at some point some beeping started.
I was starting to panick a bit, I switched through other gears, and only thing that was showing up was N or some bars if I recall.
I figured some kind of computer glitch, so I shut off car, and restarted, same thing was happening. I believe I shut car off again & restarted & it was then switching gears properly.
I read a post about mistakenly resetting transmission or something like that, by accidentally holding down brake pedal while starting car???
I'm pretty used to holding holding down brake pedal while starting car, not sure if in this instance I had done this while starting, but am wondering if this could have been the problem?
I have driven the car 2 days now, and it seems to be fine; except for today, it seemed to shift fine, but I heard the beeping sound for a second or two while shifting into gear automatically.
I like driving the car in manual mode sometimes, and sometimes when car has first been started and after warming up a bit, I notice that it doesn't catch into gear on first or sometimes second try???

So, if you've read this far :D what could be my issue? Sorry if this has been discussed a million time, couldn't quite pinpoint it in forums.

Best,
Joe
I had same problem with the ForTwo City Passion Coupe 2006 - apparently this make of car or this 2006 model has a transmission flaw. Im up to my second transmission.

This problem has nothing to do with whether your foot is on the brake or you've done a "teach in" for your transmission. I tried all that.

The actual solution is to make sure the latest version of firmware is installed in your Smart's Transmission Control Unit (TCU) -- BB Benz is correct in making this clear.

My Fortwo stopped dependably going into R or D a few days ago. It's last firmware update had been back in Feb. 2009, so after reading this forum, I called the dealer to arrange an upgrade. They tried to thwart my effort by saying I should pay several hundred dollars for a full tranny diagnostic, but eventually I prevailed. They charged me $110 (the $10 for "consummable shop supplies" - can you believe it?) to hook it up tho their computer and install the latest firmware. (They wouldn't tell me if it's v2.03 or what, just that it's the current version.)

Result: Tranmission problem solved -- it goes into R and D every time now. My heartfelt thanks to BB Benz and others here. Cheers.
Thank you - will try this. I was told that the ForTwo City Passion Coupe 2006 - apparently this make of car or this 2006 model has a transmission flaw - ?? Are you aware of the flaw ?? as I had transmission replaced and ended up with same problem not going into gear and 3 bars on screen.

Hello, when you say it would go into “D” & “R” do you mean the visual letters on your dash, or the shift stick wouldn’t move, or do you mean the car wouldn’t physically move forward or backwards?
Thanks in advance.

JoeSmart1 has not been here in just over 9 years so not much chance of getting an answer from him. Maybe someone else can be of help to you.
