I took my 2012 Smart Fortwo to Columbus, O-H today. The transmission has been making a funny noise. I read here before about someone having a noise that sounded like nuts and bolts in a coffee can spinning. That is EXACTLY what mine is doing. I worked all night then drove to Columbus from Lima.... 95 miles and waited for 5 hours to be told... The pressure plate is broken... and they have to order parts and will have them next week. They said they have never seen this before...has anyone else seen or heard of this?

Hard to believe a pressure plate could destruct on a computer controlled system unless it was defective. I would think the computer wouldn't allow the clutch to be engaged at higher engine speeds or excessive torque. Maybe it was that hemi you dropped in there??

I would see about escalating it to a higher power for resolution. Maybe a regional manager or ??

It's possible! One day I was sitting at a light in Neutral (it was a super long trip). The light turned green and people started honking at me. In a panic I floored it and put it into Drive. The RPMs soared past 5K while the poor clutch attempted to move the car forward. I caught this just in time before something really bad happened. The car smelled absolutely awful and the transmission punished me by locking me out until the RPM dropped to idle.

My 2016 has sounded like nuts and bolts rattling around the second day I got it. It’s just a matter of time before total failure.

I have a question. I’ve gotten a “cruise is not operative at this time” about 3-5 times.

Is there anything I can do to head off a not working ever again message. Is there a linkage cable that may have come loose I could check.

I do one thing consistently. I lock the doors before trying to find the ignition port.

Turning it off and starting again worked last night.

Thank you.

I have been driving it for a couple months with it making this noise. Someone on here said it was "normal" for a Smartie to make this noise. It wasn't doing this when I bought it so it can't be "normal" I had a couple muscle cars in my youth and put the transmissions thru holy hell and never broke a plate.

The “can of bolts” noise commonly mentioned around here is normal, but typically it’s so quiet that you can only hear the noise when it echoes off something. My 2012’s made the noise the second I started the engine and pulled it off the lot! 137k and still chugging strong, it even pulls trailers too!

Yours, while having the same sound description, was much worse. :/
