I've seen a couple of these around at bike shows. They appear to be very good quality construction and are watertight. I'm toying with the idea of getting one and color-matching it to my Passion.

It looks like those attach to a VERTICAL part of the bike. Be sure to check if there is a vertical location on the smart. Otherwise, you'd have to figure a modification...

I'm sure a hitch adaptor could be made.
Also a extra special hitch mount with a vertical mount on each side could be used for two of those.

Appears so...

I just received an email from one of the factory techs. He indicated that they've adapted these to a variety of automobiles, including MGs and Coopers.

I'm wondering about using the rear tow hook points to attach a sort of narrow, powder-coated "bumper" with a welded rectangular plate in the center. The plate would be the attachment point for the trailer...something unobtrusive that would blend in well with car when the trailer wasn't attached....

Bushtec makes a very nice product. IIRC, they also offer racks for the top of trailer to carry even more cargo.

I wanted something a little more quirky, that's why I'm leaning toward a colored-matched Uni-Go. I think the Smart/Uni-Go set up would be a real head-turner.

Wow. You have $2400 or $2500 to spend on a 5 cubic foot trailer? Granted, it looks nice (behind a bike), but considering the options available, it seems a rather extravagant expense for so little a trailer.
Granted, the option I took isn't for everyone, but, for about $400, I put together the following:
1. Harbor Freight 42"x48" utility trailer w/spare tire;
2. Sear X-cargo 18 cubic foot roof-top carrier on trailer.

In addition (future enhancements):
Remove the car-top carrier, and replace with (as needed)
Grill and open cargo area for tailgating;
18" box frame with a car top camper (google "car top camper" to get a number of options) to make it into a week-ender camper.

It also allows me to put virtually any other frame-work (granted, it isn't huge, so some things are out of the question) on it, so that I can transport things that won't fit in/on a smart.

This same trailer is featured in a couple of web sites, made for motorcycles.

Just a thought.

From an engineering standpoint, it's not pretty.

The thing is on one wheel. It's designed to lean with a bike, keeping the G-force in the same plane as the tire/wheel. Mount it to a smart and every time you turn it puts a nasty torsional force on the mount because the tire patch is on the bottom and the Cg is much higher, so it's trying to fall over. That also puts a sideways load on the wheel and the bearings -- which may, or may not, be up to the task.

When going straight down the highway, I'd be concerned that it would "clunk" as it tried to fall left and then right, oscillating between the two sides.

If your heart is set on it, make sure that they will accept a return if it does not work out.

For a picture of the Smart with a Bushtec check out my gallery. I just did most of the Blueridge Parkway and the trailer pulls with no problems. I really don't go anywhere without it. It fits my luggage,my golf clubs and my spare tire and some other misc. stuff. The air ride on the trailer will not let the trailer bounce which means no shifting of anything inside. Not a cheap trailer but well worth the money.
