I am not going to believe it unless Miss Mercedes confirms it, but this rumor is being spread.

We need to make this a sticky.
Do a search on "smarts on lombard" and there are many threads with photos and memories of this event.
There was a professional photographer hired for the event, but I believe his website is no longer active.
The photo I posted above was taken by him from a bucket truck raised well above the street in order to get as many vehicles in the shot as possible.
It's a day I'll always remember.

Elon Musk announced that Tesla’s engineering team had turned its focus on a next-generation electric car platform that will be half the price of the Model 3/Y platform.

For years now, Tesla has been talking about making cheaper electric vehicles, but inflation and high demand for electric cars have led to prices going up instead.
The automaker has been talking about a next-generation platform enabling a $25,000 electric car in the past. At one point, CEO Elon Musk said that Tesla was aiming to release the cheaper vehicle as soon as 2023.
If it doesn’t have that smart car shape the fun is gone

One thing to keep in mind is that some automakers use a cheap price to entice people, then end up producing very few of them. Elon promised that the Model 3 would start at $35,000. It did, but for just long enough to say that it sold some. Currently, the Model 3 starts at $46,990.

Sondors famously grabbed headlines by advertising an electric motorcycle with a 0-60 of 6 seconds, a top speed of 80 mph, and a price of $5,000. They sold a batch for $5,000 before hiking the price to $6,500. And oh, actual 0-60 is 12 seconds...

Right after the revamp to the EV tax credit was announced, a number of automakers hiked prices on specific models by $7,000 or more. Coincidentally, that's about the amount that the new tax credit would shave off of the purchase price. But props to GM, as the Bolt has bucked the trend by getting dramatically cheaper.

I would be surprised if they’re able to get this “affordable” $25k car in customers hands in less than 7 years time. Tesla can’t even keep up with demand for the Model Y and is already several years delayed on releasing the cyber truck and roadster.
OK, I can pretty much confirm the original post was just blowing smoke and the linked site is just making stuff up about electric cars. This morning they said the MG4 was on its way to the US. I have seen absolutely zero legitimate suggestion that SAIC motors has any intention of entering the US market with their MG brand.
